1965 K code convertible #s matching drivetrain

  • After twelve years of ownershiip, i am kicking around the idea of selling ...

Matching numbers, Hurst Comp shifter, Cobra dressup, will include unrestored chrome dressup parts, it had had some previous metal work done, GT lamps and trumpets added, not sure on the extent of metal work done before i bought it.. , i had the floors and front frame well and shock tower replaced, most original parts accept carb and alt, 27k on speedo most likely original, 8K rally Pac clock needs attention,

was caspian blue, with med blue/white top, now a sikkens x1y1 satin silver (porsche color) with sonnenland (fabric used on the mercedes)canvas top very nice install, black leather custom interior (copy of standard style) has original spinner hub caps. nice car, shows and drives well, numbers verified a few years ago by harlan at horseheaven mustang restorations,in washinggton state, MCA judge and K code nut!) interstingly he found thatit has many 64.5 parts on it.. built 04 Mar 65 Not sure what to ask for it.. but they have topped 70K on the NADA, ready to move in another direction vehicle wise.. will not give it away.. needs some tlc . but is a great driver.. and gets a lot of thumbs up.. i have driven it about 6000 miles since i've owned it, lets start at 58k OBO Mike Sullivan 256 828 5864

  • Since you poeted this in the price discussion section, I will comment.

NADA is garbage...so that number is irrelevant.

While your car sounds nice, in todays stressed market, a severly modifed K code will bring much less than a properly restored K car in it's original factory combination.

Without documentation...forget trying to represent 27K original miles. Buyers are far more savvy today...especially on a rare auto.

    Non-GT cars bring 20% less than GT's...

Probably closer to the 30-40 range.

  • i am not sure what you mean by severely modified, only changed the colors.. took that into consideration, thanks for your candor, it will be taken into consideration for future discussions. mike

  • I'm not so sure you can state that the 27K on the odo is original. Not with the floors being replaced, doesn't really add up. The shifter is a distraction, put the original valve covers on. They help it look like what it is, a HiPo, right? Good Luck.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Oh, and the top.... shoould be vinyl, not BMW cloth, even tho it may look fabulous, it move it further from a correct, UNMODIFIED HiPo.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Mike, I did not post this response in the "For Sale" category. You posted the car in the "Pricing Discussion" category...a double post. THAT is where I posted. I would never hijack someones for sale ad. It seems the MODERATOR edited the post and put them here, so please take it up with them.

My candor is the result of this...a double post in which you posted the price of $53,000 and $58,000 Two different prices in the same website!

Wrong Paint, Wrong top, wrong interior....yes, that is severe. It will cost someone $15,000 to refinish the car properly. I would call that severe modification.

  • to all, first off.. thanks for the welcome back to the US, i think we all know the cars pretty well, and you all seem like pretty straight shooters. i just think this site should enjoying the hobby, you guys are all to serious! to me, its more about hauling ass in a k code.. with a big shiteatin grin on your face.

but i bet most of them .. sit in the garage and never get driven, like mine.. i would like to have something i am not afraid to get out and drive..

next: on the many auctions i have seen and been too, again and again, matching numbers cosmetics were not that big an issue on a ground up resto, and did not reflect so in the sale price, but i have to say rarity was, maybe on an unrestored original, but who has one of those? that is my oppinion on that,

i had originally thrown around both prices and decided that the 53k was probably a more realistic starting point.. and could not remove the other post.. "my bad" as the kids say, i have to admit.. 58 was a bit of a stretch in these times.. but this was, as i said a starting point.. no idea what i could really let it go for? .. maybe 48, or 45K . .who knows.. just remember, you can always go down in price. .but never up, and just because the economy is bad for some .. its a boom town for many of the wealthy..while our middle class lifestyles are being stretched pretty thin.. . the wealthy remain relatively unaffected,

i am amazed at how important utmost originality is to some, whats more important to me is the real deal drive train, i mean that is why we love them..or? and i would be courious to find out how many of the 65 K convertibles out there are actually matching numbers, i am absolutely positive this one is.

and yes.. 15k is probably what you would pay to have the car done at a shop, depending on what part of the country you are in.. i paid for the paint and body with a 1983 Audi Urquattro that i paid 6000dm for in 1993 ($3800 at the time),.. i can tell you the shop owner was very happy to get it..if you have ever driven one you'd know why.

    ...anyway back to k codes..

i would agree that it would be nicer all original, but i was in germany.. no enamel paints..so i used the best i could get "sikkens" any one think otherwise? also, no mustangs unlimited or mustangs in the junk yard.. it was seriously cheaper to have custom leather interiour done..than buy, ship and professionally install original aftermarket? and it looks just like the corporate leather used in henry jr. K car, what the heck? you do what you can.. and the best you can with and where you are or? .. the top cost three times what a pvc vinyl top cost .. and believe me looks 3 times better, it was a personal choice.. i wouldnt change it for anything...and if someone bought it . .they wouldnt either,

so here is the story on the car, i scoured the u.s. for 5 years looking for a 65 kcode convertible for sale between 91 and 96, this was one i could afford, of very few i found, of course those were a bit different times.. the dawn of the internet in the US.. and it practically non existent in Germany at the time.. after owning a 66 T5 2+2 i was ready for something rarer,

the car was found in stratford connecticut in the early days of the VMF site back in May of 96, i cant remember the guys name.. he was in the middle of a driver restoration, and had two sets of twins.. but this is what he told me the background was ..

the original owner was a recently retired State Patrolman who bought himself the car as a retirement present to use for fishing, he developed health issues shortly after retiring having driven the car for about 4 years and fell seriously ill, dying in or around 1970, the car was never driven much..20800 miles showed on the odomoeter when i bought it, from the information parlayed to me from the second owner, who i had no reason to mistrust, said it languished in a garage for some years.. until the widow needed room for her car, and then it was pushed off into a barn.. and then later out behind the barn..where it sat for nearly 20 years.. until 98 when the second owner was given the car by his brother a landscaper preparing the home for sale as the widow was going into a rest home, he happily took the car in lieu of payment and gave it to his brother,

the factory markings were still evident everywhere on the car, and still are on the transmission, the motor was like new on the inside, still having hoe marks in unmolested bores, from this information, this is why i say. Probably original mileage.. as i said..

well guys.. i was looking to head in a different direction, but if its not meant to be... i guees its not that bad a deal to be stuck with a #s matching kcode convertible or? thanks for bringing me back to my senses.. the car is no longer for sale.

    regards mike sullivan

ps .. if there is someone that can post pics please let me know how... i have no idea how.. and i will post a pic.. thanks mike

  • With the number of modifications you have to the car, it will have to really strike a chord with someone with similar taste to change hands. Having said that, I find it is always easier to lower the price, rather than the other way around.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Hey Mike.

You can use this site to upload and post pictures:

Mate at the end of the day it's your car. Whatever you did to the car you did for you and no one else and not for resale purposes. There's a buyer for everything. You put a price on that you think is right and it goes from there. If you think 53 or 58 is your starting point, well that's what it is. If someone is interested in the car they will get in touch and then starts the negotiations. You have been upfront with everything you've done, so I see no issues at all. I think what you've said is right, it's the drivetrain that makes the car, the rest is cosmetic, after all it's not like you've put huge wings on the car, flared the guards or tried to turn it into a Shelby.

If you go ahead with the sale, good luck with it. I'm looking forward to seeing the pics.

    Regards,

    René

No harm was intended...The post was moved here because it is the appropriate place for this thread: the car is apparently for sale by a member. The "PRICING INFO" section is mainly devoted to logging and tracking the price of cars that have been sold, or have been offered for sale in a classified ad, magazine, or auction (online or live) that ends with a "No Sale" outcome.

  • Concourse K's are going for about $40-45K on some of the collector/classic classified sites. Your expectations may be unrealistic, but if you can sell it for that, more power to you.

  • thanks walt, i am dont take offense, but just have to wait and see... at this point as stated .. i will remove it from the market and look for a daily driveer.. maybe a little six with AC, auto and just to have fun.. cruiser to keep it company in the garage.. thanks mike

  • Hello Mike,

Welcome back to the good ole USA. I got back from Baghdad in Feb.

I want to vouch for this car as I have driven it and she runs as great as she looks! I cannot believe you are selling it. Good Luck.
