65 K Coupe Race Car

  • I've decided to sell my last 1965 K Hipo coupe. This car was a Ford engineers/dealer ordered (Cunningham Ford,Ohio) owned race car that set 2 National records back in 1966-67.Car was raced from 1964 thru 1973 then parked in garage.Body is super straight,NO rust and no crash damage and was never tubbed as it ran C/SA.Car has no deadner, insulation, under coating or seam sealer.Radio and heater delete car.Body was painted 3 years ago and looks super nice and only has 12,000 original miles.Has traction bars welded to original 1965 9 inch housing with cross member.Steering box, sheet metal everything I checked is correct dated to car.Motor out of car but original serial numbered and race prepped complete long block to this RARE Mustang.Interested parties e-mail me for details as the price is $25G for this super nice car.Have also found original bubble hood for car and goes with it.

  • Do you have any video clips of a run of this Kar, we all would SO like you to share a run with us, it must be really cool

  • Sorry, don't have any video of car as I didn't race it.The original owner and another one of his drivers put all the runs on the car.

  • Historical curiosity wonders who they were, and if they might have some contributions here!!

  • I do have a pic of it with the second driver standing next to car in 1971 with different paint scheme. When it ran in it's glory it was called "Pony Express".Not sharp on posting pics but wish I were.

  • Found some addition info on car. These factory ordered race cars were special and I understand from talking with a few knowledgeable Mustang guys that they only made 12 of these factory race Hipo Mustangs and only five have been accounted for with this being the sixth one.Car is missing the original bubble hood but was replaced with fiberglass cowl and R model front racing apron. All it needs is a new home with pics on request?

  • Being a C/SA bracket kar, is this a 427? 289's would have been L-M I thought. Looked on the internet, couldnt find this kar but did find the list of K code race Kars, all were fastbacks, sequintial vins.

  • According to a friend of mine who is a NHRA tech man the class for the Hipo Mustangs in the 60's was C/S as the Fairlanes ran D/S.The correct class in AHRA was F3/GS for all the small block cars.I went by his knowledge and he checked the records in NHRA on this car and didn't find an records set by this car in NHRA.I had him check just to be sure that the story was told to me about the record runs was accurate as to them being set in AHRA and not NHRA.Don't know how I could find out about the AHRA records as they went out of buiness along time ago.Anyway your right about the L-M classes as that's what I use to run with my Mustang was L and that was an NHRA class. This Hipo Mustang hasn't been ran as far as I know since 1972 and looks like it as the suspension was never updated and looks like 1965 race trim!

  • Thanks for the link but it had nothing to do with these factory race 289 Hipo Mustangs. All the info was for the A/FX 427 Mustangs along with the long nose altered cars!

  • After reading the AHRA rule book from 1965 looks like the class for this car was F5/GS as that was the single 4 barrel, solid cam 289 Hipo class.

  • Well have had 4 offers but no sale so I'm in the process of going thru the motor.Taking the 12.5 pistons out and putting 10.5 pistons back in and freshing the motor up.Motor is complete with all correct parts except for fan and factory headers which this car had tube headers on.Am going to detail firewall by stripping and putting new correct paint on.The price is $28G freshened so who wants it?

  • After NO real buyers and checking all the numbers and looking car over I decided to paint and detail car back to the way it was delivered.Car is stripped down now and am going to get body soda blasted and in primer in the next month or so.Took rear-end out of car and am detailing it back to original.Car did have 4.11 and Detroit Locker that I was told was ordered in the car when I bought it.The things done and stories told have all been true so far and hopefully in the next 2 months can get the car painted and body back together.Talked with a good friend of mine who has done many major restorations on some very expensive factory race cars that this car is truely one of the 12 built for G/S racing as even Ed Terry had one he raced in the same class and was built like this one as he restored it and is owned by a friend of his.

  • Have been researching the cars history and came up with some AHRA record certificates and original pictures of the car in the early days.Body is still in line to be blasted but most of all the body parts are blasted and primed waiting it's reunion.Unbelievable how this car still looks after all these years and hardly no miles makes it worth doing.Am documenting all the parts of the car for album at a later date.

  • Have done alot of work to car but need to sell car now as I've got other projects.Motor is done and car needs to be restored but most parts in primer.I will sell car for $25G

WAY TO MUCH MONEY FOR THIS CAR.........

  • In 1964, The Fastbacks, a bunch of Ford engineers, went racing with a 1965 HiPo fastback. 289, auto, and it was ran in D/SA. One of those engineers was Jack Roush. It held both 'ends' of the national record when it was purchased by my friend who raced for Ricart Ford as one of the 'Lively Ones'. The other Lively One was a 64 427 auto Galaxie that was bought from the Fastbacks at the same time by my friends brother. It was also a record holder at that time. I helped push those cars up and down the staging lanes more than once. I don't believe I ever saw another 65 HP with an automatic in it but if you are a Ford engineer I guess you can put anything in the books. Anyway, that's how it ran and that's how it was classed by NHRA. We didn't have an AHRA track near us so I don't know about them. I believe Marv has met my friend when in Columbus.

    Goldy

  • Not too much money for this car as Smart wrote the book about these 12 factory race cars and only 7 have been found.Lockett and Perkins awhile back said restored this car could be a six figure car. This is a nice car with no rust or panel replacement and I've seen junk bodies bring $11G so go figure. If it don't sell I'll finish it when I get the chance but not giving this RARE Hipo away as I don't need the money!

  • He said "am going to get body soda blasted ". I will NEVER SODA BLAST A CAR AGAIN!!! THat stuff runs out of the car forever, and running water through it makes it worse. What a nightmare!!
