• nope.

using mobil 15w-50. has plenty of zinc w/o additives (1300 ppm). Other weights of Mobil 1 don't have as much. If using them I'd recommend adding Cam Shield to the oil. In any case, any name brand synthetic oil would be an improvement over conventional oil: less friction will help your engine last longer.

  • I notice the bottle they are showing is the same weight (15W40) as is recomended for Diesel engines-as I recall thats what we put in my K engine-Shell Rotella 15W40-and added a zinc type additive-I agree about the synthetic oils, I use them in all my daily drivers, including my '99 F350's 7.3 Power Stroke Diesel engine, I think when it comes time to change the oil I'll go with the Shell Rotella Synthetic.......what exactly does the zinc do for our vintage car engines? anything particular to the flat tappet cam engines?

  • despite the current love affair for Shell Rotella, I would advise against using it. First of all, it has had the zinc levels reduced, so it is not as attractive in that area as it used to be. But of greater importance, it is designed primarily for diesel engines. Although they are a high compression engine, they do not run at the same rpm levels that gas engines do, especially the Ford small block Hi-Po 289's. The additive package for gas engines takes this into account, and had more anti-foaming additives as well other additives specific to the requirements of higher rpm use.If you would contact the customer service of Shell Rotella, they will tell you they make other oils better suited for high rpm gasoline engine use.

As pointed out above both Mobil 1 15w-50 and Valvoline VR-1 5w-30 synthetic oil are good choices for our engines.

If you do a search on this forum if zinc or zddp you will have plenty of reading material. The VMF also is a good place to search:

Works fine for me. Anyone can email me, and I'll email it if someone cannot open it.

  • Amsoil has a specific synthetic for our older engines, a 20W-50 with the Zinc. My hipos all have it. as one guy used to say, " I uses it on my hair, too!" I guess he thought it was good for anything. [ not me, of course, heh heh] Amsoil.com

  • I just switch to Mobil 1 0w-40 (from Mobil 1 15w-50) for the winter months as an experiment. I added enough Cam Shield to raise the zddp level to 1400 ppm, The oil pressure is 100% unchanged from what was indicated when using the 15w-50.

    Here's my oil pressure @ 50 - 75 degrees F. air temp. (measured over a 3 hour drive today) with a 180 degree thermostat

    cold engine:

    pressure @ idle: 82 psi

    hot engine:

    idle (800 rpm) ...... 35 psi

    1500 rpm ..............70 psi

    2000 rpm ..............72 psi

    2500 rpm ..............75 psi

    3000 rpm ............. 80 psi

    3500 rpm ............. 82 psi

    4000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    5000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    6000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    6500 rpm ............ 85 psi
