What's worth keeping?

  • O.K. for everyone that has ever seen "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks and Shelly Long you will understand that "my two weeks" has finally arrived! The rear end noise is gone, the paint has been fixed and it just needs a final cleanup before it is mine again.

My question though is, what old parts are worth keeping? I have a lot of stuff that I just bought repos of because the cost was cheaper than re-chroming, etc. For instance, I have the original seat backs that are "Quality Control Certified Sep 26, 1964" they aren't in terrible shape, but not really nice enough to put in my newly restored car. Should I keep them for posterity? See if someone else can use them? I don't know, but I DO know that my wife will want a pretty good explanation if I keep a bunch of old parts around!!

I have the old bumpers, intake, starter, oil pump, tail lights, etc, etc, etc. I really don't want to keep much of it but will anyone else want it either?

Sorry for my rambling, but my wife will want to know!!

Your advice and suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    David K

  • I kept all things that had any sort of date code. Put them in a box and shoved them in the attic. I may want to restore the original parts and reinstall them at a latter date. I say hide them from the wife...Billy p.s. any pics?

  • I go through so many parts like you mention it gets crazy trying or even thinking about keeping them. I throw away a lot, but it is kind of weird. Lately I just post the items on Craigslist or eBay and take whatever I get. you would be surprised at the parts people buy...stuff I would throw away, I actually get paid for.

  • Also consider there are some out there with original low mileage car that can use nice original parts. Many would rather use parts with a little character than incorrect NOS or repo parts..... plus used parts don't stand out againist the other parts

  • I never throw things out, original or repro. You never know when you will want the item you threw out for something later. If I had tossed my exhaust hangers when I put in a new system a few years ago I would been screwed with the Arvinode project. The old hangers provided a point of reference that matched the 65 parts catalog and another car on this forum, and the only place they were used on the early cars was with the Arvinode systems.

Restore what you can and store the rest when you replace them.

  • My car is the only thing I pack rat stuff. Unless it is smashed or rusted out and damaged beyond hopes of repair it goes in my save box tagged to what it is and where it came from.
