Calling all June 64 K's.

  • I have read what is acceptable for date codes on parts. But I am trying to validate what could be original and what date would be "better" than another. For those that have original drivetrains as close to June 11th 64 as possible, what are your dates? I have done research on non-K cars, but was wondering Ford's scheduling with the K. Thanks in advance.

  • Sorry, I'm not much help with your other dates, but I am curious, because I have a 5 Bolt HiPo block in a car. This particular block has "4F18F" assembly date. I just thought that it may be interesting to compare VIN's. The VIN on my engine is 5F07K135973.

  • That throws me off now. Assembled, in theory, a week later but that vin is much earlier. Mine is 5F07K163926. I found a non-hipo car with a vin sequence of 1636?9 that had an assembly date of 4F2....but it was a 260. Were K's that far behind this early in production?

  • After you posted your VIN, I'm going to re-check that VIN on my engine. My VIN seems way too early for a HiPo. I'm going by my written notes from quite a while ago. The engine is still in the car, but I'm going to check it again this evening.

I'll be back with the information.

  • OK. I checked it out again. It is actually 5F08K185973. That "8" sure does look like a "3"! It is definitely an "8" though, which is the only thing that makes any sense. That VIN would have had a scheduled production date of around July 1st. Very sorry for the mis-information originally posted.

I'll have to check the heads. I'm assuming that the harmonic balancer on my engine is not original, because it is dated "L3." It is a HiPo balancer though. Is your balancer original?

Other components such as the distributor, engine tag, intake, exhaust manifolds, etc. are gone.

I don't have the casting date on the block yet.

  • Since the date on the door is not the real build date (likely) of the car and the range (from documented cases) can be off by up to three weeks before or after I would suggest you try another practice

Ask for examples of stamping dates from (for example) original engine compartment panels and steering box, then compare that spread to the casting dates on the engine parts. This way your comparing at least solid data points.

    Just a thought

  • Good Idea, Thanks. I will add that to my research. I crawled all over the 260 car I found. Panels, engine pieces, everything I could get my eyes to see. And that car made alot of sense to me. All dates appeared as tho scheduling and plant supply parts ran without any hitches. Most engines I have seen (I don't have tons of examples, mind you), but the components all seem to run consistent with cast dates and assy. Did find one example of a 'C' code that was assy on the 12th of June but the block was casted back on May 13th. But other than that, most seem consistent. And since I do not know an 'actual' build date, I am trying to complete my car so that everything matches with some consistency....I could probably say consistent one more time.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

    Club 33, My balancer is a C3OE L3 also...not original.

  • I have a Friday June 12, 1964 K coupe 5F07K164642. The drive train is not original because it was stolen and striped in 1965. It has the original door tag, but not the original fenders, so I guess I can't help much. Tom

  • Yes collecting this info can be allot of work but hopefully will bring some answers or at least a better understanding. Have a spread sheet for all years all plants - doing about the same thing

By chance do you have any information on five and six bolt HP289s engines assembled between 4H25 and 4H28. There were two batches of engines, one five bolt and one six bolt, showing up in Cobras from that period.

    5-bolt HP289 engine for Cobra CSX2551

C4OE-6015F engine block, casting date 4F4, block machining date 4H25B

C4OE-6059A timing cover, 64 with 8 dots casting date

    C3OE B harmonic balancer, G4 date

C4OE-6059A water pump casting date 64 with 7 dots

5-bolt HP289 engine for a sister Cobra (engine number just 16 units different)

    C5OF-E distributor, dated 4HB

    C5OE-A /A 4V intake, date 4H6

Engine assembly date looks like 4H28 (which is consistent with other known engines in Cobras)
