Bob Mannel and all, I recently acquired a " hipo short block" that was to have been never apart, and uncut. When I got it home and took a look at it with a HiPo friend, he pointed out that the main caps looked just like Mexican caps, with dates cast into the center of the cap. My question is were these style of caps EVER USED ON A GENUINE HIPO? My gut tells me no, and I paid a lot for it, so am sad to have to call the guy, but what else can I do? ![]()

The best place to look is in Bob's book, but I don't believe those caps were ever used during hipo production. They came later and frequently change hands on ebay.

Sounds as though you'll have to "call the guy" to get things straight...The date coded Mexican caps are not original for a 289 HiPo engine.
Here's a set of pictures of genuine HiPo caps followed by a picture of a set of the Mexican caps.
