Timing Chain Question

  • Ralph, Just to clarify a little more on my end.

If you were able to get the current type double roller chain assembly with the hatchet in the timing cover with the cam sprocket spacer, I agree that the chain would line up. The extra width of the lower sprocket will move the balancer out the equivalent amount making the lower crank pulley further out than the water pump pulley. The only good way to correct that would be to take the extra amount off of the snout of the balancer where it mates to the lower sprocket. All of this is a moot point though because the fuel pump eccentric runs very close to the timing cover in the standard configuration and could not take the extra spacing forward. I just looked at one of my assembled engines with the fuel pump off to verify this.

  • Fred - thanks that helps - I hadn't thought about the balancer moving out but it will - this just shows how one small change has a ripple effect.
