How do you replace the rear main seal?

  • Time to replace the rear main seal, but I have never done one before.

Any of you guys know how to do this? From some research I have done it says that I do not have to pull the crankshaft while other info says that it may be necessary. What is the best way?

    Thanks,

    Ron

  • I have done it before. Remove oil pan back off main bearnig caps then remove the rear cap. Remove old seal then slide new seal in you want the ends to be in the 12 and 6 postion instead of the 9 and 3 postion. Make sure you put the new seal in facing the right way or the oil will run out in yourbell housing. After you get it in re torque your main caps and put your oil pan back on. Do not forget to put oil back in your engine.

  • Once I did this the hard way, no rope seal, of course,

by just removing the last cap and press the seal all around

with my thumb. Still remember how my thumb felt for years after that.
