Early hipo with automatic choke

  • I was told that a friend's 1963 Fairlane 271 289 had an automatic choke on its 4100. It was a K code car. If this was true, what exhaust manifold did it use to get the hot air for the choke?

  • The right hand HiPo exhaust manifold on the K code Fairlanes have a cast-in boss that accepts a heat riser tube for the automatic choke. The casting number is C3OE 9430 C. Around April of 1964, a manual choke was issued for the HiPo Fairlanes which required a revised manifold cast without the heat riser boss, and carries casting number C4ZE 9430 A.

Here are a few pictures of the early style Fairlane manifolds. Note the heat riser boss clearly visible on the right side manifolds just forward of the outlet flange.

I've got a couple nice photos but can't seem to post them, computer illiterate!

Hello Terry, any luck on getting a HIPO radiator? I am keeping my eyes open for you one. Email me the date code again and how much you will pay so I have an idea.

Can you email me the photo's? I need to see some detail on how the auto choke hooks up on the Fairlane.

    Thanks,

    Gary

There is no such thing as a "hipo" radiator.

  • Whoa, please enlighten me to the specifics on the existance, or not, of a hipo radiator for the 64 Fairlane. I've used a 3 core unit for the past 20 years. I bought it many years ago when starting my restoration, I know it's non-original. Can you give me more information on the type of radiator used in the hipo fairlanes? Maybe I can get by with just purchasing the correct date coded tanks and use my core? Any info appreciated, Thanks, Terry

Sorry, I was refering to K Mustangs. Couldn't tell you if there is a difference on the Fairlanes.

Yes, there is a difference with the Fairlane and the HIPO radiators are very hard to find. The early HIPO Fairlane exhaust like Gene is showing is even harder to find. I think there were a few early 64 1/2 HIPO Mustangs that also had an automatic choke 4100.

  • Production Mustang HiPos all got the manual choke version. There was at least on pre-production Mustang that was loaned to the media by Ford that did have the automatic choke. But, with the June introduction of the Mustang HiPo, they would have all had manual chokes.

The Fairlane HiPo radiator was a 3-row unit. For a 64 Fairlane, the radiator core to buy is Transpro #122492. Modine has one as well #10503. The HiPo top tank was specially marked with a C4OE number. The top tank cover is the most valuable part. The rest can be replaced. In fact, you can build a HiPo radiator using a standard 62-64 20" Fairlane 2-row frame as a core. The radiator shop will have to make the bottom tank as none are available. A Mustang 3-row 20" core bottom tank would work. But, to get the numbers right, you need the HiPo radiator top cover. Otherwise, almost any 20" core top tank cover from a 2-row radiator will work. But, in this case, you might want the Transpro 128614 core which will mate to the standard top cover better. The Modine number is 10498.
