Trans oil leak

  • Guys I have an annoying problem. I just rebuilt my motor. Before I did this the trans did not leak oil. However I replaced the front oil seal as a precaution. When I took the drivesahft out during the winter I lost a bit of trans oil on the floor, so I topped up the trans to the level plug on the side. It seemed to take a LOT of oil.

First trip out and the rear oil seal leaks - badly.

So I get a new correct type seal and tailshaft bushing, which I find is shot ( and turns out to be the cause of my annoying driveline clunk ). New seal and bushing fitted, seal and slipyoke lubed with assembly lube.

I go out today and do about 50-60 miles and the bl**dy seal is leaking. The slipyoke is in good condition and I used some scotchbrite and rubbed round the seal seat area to retain oil when I fitted it back. I am at a loss as to why the thing is leaking.

    Any ideas ?

The level plug is very high on the box, am I overfilling ? should I take a bit of oil out ? as I did not have the problem before when the oil level was a bit lower.

    Thanks.

Mark, The low oil level is partially why the rear trans bushing wore out in the first place. You cannot overfill the trans by adding oil at the fill plug as any excess will run out of the hole with the fill plug removed. You may still have an issue with the driveshaft yoke as they need to be pretty smooth to seal properly. It sounds like you tried hard to do everything right however your new rear seal could still be defective if you find the driveshaft yoke to be good.

In cleaning up the exhaust I find that the staining along the pipes appears to be wellseal. I put wellseal around the outside of the new seal when I put it in. Now I wonder as the seal did not seem to fit very tightly if the oil is coming from between the seal and the tailshaft.

So I have taken the seal out and cleaned it and the tailshaft up with carb cleaner, and refitted it back with RTV gasket sealant.

I will put back the oil that I took out and let you know what happens.

    Thanks

Mark, if the RTV doesn't work I would try Hylomar. It's a great product, and British like yourself, originally developed by Rolls-Royce Plc Aerospace Division for sealing joints in jet turbine engines.

Over here it is sold under the Permatex label, I haven't found anything it won't seal. Never dries out either. Seals against leakage from gas, oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid & coolant.

On my '66 I've used it on the gas tank drain plug, rear end sealing around the troublesome leaking stud threads, engine gaskets, etc. I've been using it at work (motorcycle mechanic) sealing up leaky old (and new) Triumphs, Hondas, etc. Works every time.

I have some Hylomar, I will see what happens. The trouble is finding out whether it is leaking past the outsde of the seal or not.

If it leaks again I will take the seal out and examine it with a magnifying glass, perhaps it is a dodgy seal ??.

Really good news on the job. I hope you are enjoying it.

    PS

Does the toploader have a breather anywhere ? I cant seem to find one and wonder if it should have one and maybe mine has been removed ?

  • Today I took the car out and cruised for about 20 miles and woopee - no leaks

So the blinking thing was leaking past the outside of the seal.

Found the breather as well and poked a wire thru it.

Going to sit and have a beer in the sun now

    Thanks all

Bit early for you was it ?

When the sun comes out over here you have to go for it, any time of the day or night.

Err hang on - got that wrong.
