Valve adjustment for 67 289K?

  • I have a Cam Research cam in my 67 289K. It's a CR288, advertised duration of 288 deg int.& 292 deg Exh. Gross valve lift, .490 Int & .490exh

    duration@.050 220deg int & 222deg exh.

They call for a .012" valve adjustment cold, int. & exh. Does this sound right? This is supposed to be the regular valve adjustment he said. They say the cam has a "short ramp"

Randy, the cam manufacturer should be the last word on valve adjustment specifications. I do not consider .012 to be all that tight if that is your thoughts. I had a 57 Chevy with a 270 horse 283 and the valve clearance on it was .008 intake and .012 exhaust. That was the factory 097 Duntov cam that was used from 57-61 in all high horse dual quad and fuel injected engines.

  • The tightest valve clearances I've ever seen (on a push-rod flat tappet engine) were on the old Triumph 650cc motorcycle. I worked in a dealership in the early 1970's and we did see a lot of burned exhaust valves from novices setting their own valves. Intakes were .002 & exhaust were .004. Very tight, but OK when set right,
