• Yes, Your alternator could be bad . If you take your alternator off and take it in to a auto part store they can check it out. If it is bad you should replace your reagulator to. If the alternator checks out good then check your reguulator. If you have a volt meter check your battery voltage with car off. If battery is charged you should read 12to 13 volts. Start the car and take the volt meter and check the battery again you should read higher then battery voltage if you do your alternator is good.If you read 15 to 16 volts your regulator is over charging the battery. BECAREFULL NOT MAKE ANY SPRKS AROUND THE BATTERY IT CALL EXPLODE, WEAR SAFETY GLASSES.

  • As a side note: If your alternator is an original Autolite teardrop case, pay the core charge, change out the guts from the new alternator to your old one. I had a rebuilder re-do my alternator and he re-used the front half of the case and tossed the back half.<img src=images/icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Thank you for all the info. My car has been sitting for a while. It won't even start unless I jump it. I will go to the local parts store and have the tests done. I'll keep you guy informed.

  • Well, I jumped the car today and went to the local parts store and had by alternator tested and it was not working. They did the old school test of unplugging the neg. while the car was running and it died. I was planning on replacing the alternator but noticed that my regulator plug (by the washer bag)was disconnected. As soon as I hooked it up all the problems went away. Thank you for your help as usual.
