A 9 volt battery will check to see if they move without hurting the gauges.

a C or D size battery can be used to safely check the AMP gauge. Connecting it one way will make the needle swing at least half way. Reverse the leads and it will make the gauge swing the other way.

I use a Lionel model train transformer that has varible DC voltage settings, works good for bench checking gauges. One caution, I had a NOS gas gauge that bench checked OK, but once installed the gauge read full all the time. Replaced the gauge that bench checked good with another, & all was well.
