find markings with ultraviolet light?

  • Just curious if anyone has thought of using an ultraviolet light or blacklight to make markings show up? I'm not absolutely sure it would work, but I was thinking of giving it a try.

  • Lyle, I think this is an interesting idea worth pursuing. Many pigments have fluorescent properties that can be exposed by UV illumination and would be harder to detect in the visible range.

  • I just got a cheap light ($10) and special UV protecting flourescence-enhancing goggles ($20)from The Blacklight Shop online. As soon as I get to try it on the car, I'll report back.

I did try it briefly on a lightswitch in the house and it made the tiny paint splatters on it glow. I guess a lot of people buy them to find scorpions in their backyards.

  • Well, the results are in. I got no flourescing from the paint markings on my car. So much for that $30, but it was worth a shot for the hobby.

  • You do know what those CSI type folks look for with that equipment....yuk!:D

I'm getting anxious to paint. I've been waiting in prep mode for so long for the right combination of available time and weather cooperation. Looks like another skunked weekend for me.

  • But Troy... The weather's great this week. Just take ANOTHER week off. Just watch out for those tough MN scorpions (I think they call 'em mosquitos around here)8)
