Hipo service block ID

  • Can someone please give me some tips on how to ID a hipo service block? I know there won't be a VIN #, but what else separates it from a standard hipo block? I think I may have one but want to be sure. Definitely has the hipo main caps. Thanks

  • Start by checking the casting date code and the assembly date (if there is one) stamped on the front boss behind the timing case cover...If these dates are 1967, you're possibly dealing with a replacement block, and if the date is later than 1967, then it's a replacement.

  • I have an H65 dated hipo engine in my Kar that does not have a VIN stamp and is date stamped 5J17P. I have been told that this is a sevice engine, but I have always thought it was way too early to be one. When I found this engine, it was in a pickup truck. It had all the shelby engine parts including a correct dated 3259 carb on it.
