Tire valves?? SS Wheels??

  • There is alot of information in the community about this, Nate tells me he has pictures and documentation to the fact they should be quite long-as much as 2 1/2" (I have not measured the long ones he put into my wheels)but they are long and Charles says that basicly Mustangs all got the same short valve stem, and if a car was equipped with wheel covers that plastic valve extensions were used, and in my case with the SS wheels that the wheel just gets the short stem and the proper Dill brand cap.

  • I guess I'm talking to myself again here but I have read the MCA current rule book and there is absolutely nothing written about the valve stems or extensions so with that in mind I don't think that anyone could have points deducted for using either configuration of stem/extension/cap, though I will admit that I don't like the looks of the LONG stems sticking out of my SS wheels-they look long enough to trip someone walking by my car....

  • Keep in mind that if every detail like this was in the MCA rulebook, it would be 100's of pages just for 64.5-66. I'm certain that you will have a point deducted for the long valve stems unless you can find Ford documentation that proves they should be that length. Also, keep in mind that the documentation should be applicable to the time period of when your car was built. Just because it may be correct for a early 64.5 car does not automatically make it correct for a July '65 car. The best proof will be original, unrestored cars. FYI, I did look at pictures of Mike Murray's car I mentioned to you. His car, with original tires still on it has the short valve stems.

I personally do not feel this is worth it for you to challenge as you will find more examples to disprove than prove.

  • If they were installed at the factory they should have the short stems installed. If they were dealer installed then they could have had any length installed.

The exception on factory installed is if it had a LA or Chicago DSO it would have had 5" long valve stems......Curb-feelers were the rage then.(just a joke)

  • Ok, I am going to have these valve stems changed......how short should I go?? wait......NPD has 1 1/4" original DILL brand valves.... so I'll get 1 1/4"....I already have plenty of the correct DILL caps!! and per Charles' suggestion before I put the wheels back on my car I will line up the bottom of the center cap emblem towards the valve stem!!

  • You should also jack up the car and rotate the tires so all the stems are neatly aligned at 6 o'clock:) Be sure to carry the jack and correct this condition each time you park<img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Round2k: I won't have to worry about carrying a jack with me at all to do this......I have a mini-hovercraft I use to load and unload my car at the shows just float it right to its show space when I can get through all the on-lookers..
