Carlite Windsheild??

  • I am looking for a correct Carlite tinted/shaded (sun X) windshield for my '65 K Convertible.

I have found a couple of places that say they can provide me the correct glass and even correctly date code it to match the rest of my glass.

I am getting the impression that these places are buying completely blank glass from overseas and stamping/etching it to order.

One place asked me which way the OVAL CARLITE logo faced.....mine, acording to my restorer reads from left to right from the OUTSIDE of car, the glass place said it could be either way...I guess all my side glass is this way as well??

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on a correct windsheild??

  • PS Auto Glass IS the company that I am most impressed with their attitude towards creating me a correct appearing windsheild.

I have NOT asked them point blank IF they are buying completely blank glass that is made overseas and then stamping/etching them per request, but I truely believe this is how they do it so reasonably.

I have to wonder now that IF there was a failure of the windsheild somehow that caused a death or serious injury and someone tried to sue CARLITE and it was found NOT to be their glass what would happen??

  • I ordered my windsheild from PS yesterday, I spoke to a "Paul" who seemed very knoledgeable and he assured me that he could provide me with a very correct, date coded windsheild for my car.

It was $175.00 acid etched with the oval Carlite logo, and proper date code, and $110.00 for shipping to my restorer's shop.

  • You guys made me curious so I went to the garage and checked

my windshield. It has the white text CarLite within an oval

and the usual text is there but on one line it says

SUN-X Vision and on the line below it says SUN-X.

Then date code and some other text.

It's a tinted glass with an upper band which I bought in 1992.

When I restored my Shelby 65 in 1991-92 I decided I wanted SUN-X glass all around. Tinted glass on a white car is so beautiful.

The rear glass already was a SUN-X (all were, correct?)

and the front glass had a upper band so I replaced it with the glass mentioned above. I also found all side windows including vent windows

in SUN-X, used with date codes. Could have been a dealer installed

option in accordance with 65 Shelby dealer paperwork as were radio,

outside mirror etc. Would not pass in a serious car show but I like it the way it is. The original front and side glass were very pitted when some earlier owner sandblasted it.

Still have the original vent windows but the side windows are gone.

Gave them to a friend in Sweden. All were dated 5C including rear glass for my early May 65 San Jose car.

    /Bo

  • "Paul" at PS told me that all glass was manufactured way before the cars build date by as much as 3 months or more, so for my July 1965 build date he is using "5 D" which equates to April 1965, he assures me that that will absolutely fly even if its not the same as the side glass as the side glass and windsheilds were manufactured independently of each other-I'm going to leave it to him-he is the glass expert.
