Frame Rail Markings

  • Does anybody know for sure what the numbers

with white grease markers on the front side frame

rails means (stands for)? The HiPo book says

"Front Frame Rail, Drivers Side" Outside behind

wheel, unit number and shift in white grease

pencil, ex. "23B" indicates 23rd unit on the

second shift. However, I looked in various magazines

from 1965 like August Hot Rod and the number on

that place on that Shelby looks like "311". In another magazine

they show the passenger side and it looks like "31" with

the third number not visable. Probably the same car that

different magazines used for their tests.

Could this number be the unit number, i.e. the last three

digits in the Ford serial number.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Thanks Charles,

Is it the date code on the fenders or did

they mark both the fenders and frame rail

    with "what number"?

    Thanks,

    /Bo

  • Numbers seen on the front frame rails of San Jose 65-66 Mustangs indicate the hook where the front fenders for that car could be located. Sequence run (and repeat themselves) run normally in a 5-6 digit sequence (often one or more numbers have disappeared over the years) and can often be found separated by a dash. For some reason (never got a chance to ask the people that laid out the San Jose plant) only 5 different digit were used

There are tons of different marks on the frame rails, inner fenders and else where . Don;t make the mistake of comparing/sharing between years, plants and even shifts as they were often very different
