Shock Tower Caps

  • Hello HiPo Forum, this is my first venture in here and I look forward to picking your brains as I work on my first K-Code.

I'm doing an under the hood, engine detail job on a `65 K-Code GT FB. I have done a few Mustangs to this point, mainly BOSS Cars, but as mentioned this is my first one of these beauties. I've recieved much help from the guys on the VMF and was turned on to this site from over there.

Right off the bat I would like to ask if all K-Codes were GT's? Maybe a silly question, but I need to ask it.

Secondly, what finish should the shock tower caps be? Are they black or phosphate & oil like the later cars I'm use to restoring?

Like I said I'm use to BOSS 302's and pretty much know them inside & out. As a matter a fact myself and good friend GS Johnson just finished up Parnelli Jones' `70 BOSS 302 which will be on the Cover and featured inside the May Issue of "Mustang Monthly". I hope you get to check it out.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom and advice on these fantastic 1st Generation Hot Rod Mustangs.

Nope...the GT was a distinct option that wasn't part of the K code option, but could be added to the K... Besides the familiar cosmetics, including a distinct, 5 gauge dash panel in 1965, the GT option requires either the 4V "A" code 289 engine @ 225 hp, or the High Performance K code 289. All GT's use identical heavy duty suspension components that are used on all standard K code Mustangs, along with the faster ratio steering box that is also standard on all K code cars. Front disc brakes were an option on all V8 Mustangs, and are included with the GT package. We've got lots of details concerning the GT option, and you can use the ADVANCED SEARCH feature to brouse the numerous posts on the current pages of the site. Don't forget to check the ARCHIVES when doing any search for even more posts than are on the current pages.

The K code 289 option originated on the mid-year 1963 Fairlane, and wasn't released for use in Mustangs until June of 1964. The GT option was introduced in April of 1965.

While not totally certain, the phosphate/oil would be OK, or you may want to use a semi-gloss underhood black finish. You may want to look at this chart for more ideas.
