Under carriage detail

  • I was reading some old post concerning the correct color for the under carriage. On my 66 FB Dearborn built Kar I have what appears to be red oxide and then that is covered with black paint. In the fender wells it has what looks like under coating. Is it possible this is original? Because if it is, I am going to clean it up and leave it as is.

    Thanks... Gary

    Yup.

  • There is an entire science to decoding undercarriage finishes when it comes to original vs restored. One thing I have found particularly helpful is a full set of the Ford Assembly Manuals that Osborn reproduces. If you look through them you will find a lot of details relating to sealants, painting, undercoating, etc. Don't know if this helps you, but do yourself and big favor and research the heck out of your car before you undertake work and take tons of pics. Uploading a few images and getting feedback can really help you along the way.

  • Gary, that actually worked fine since when we click on your server URL a browser window pops up with the directory of your images. A more direct way to insert an image is to click on the "Insert Image" icon, on the "Format" row, when you make or reply to a post and the appropriate image HTML tags will be inserted, then just add the picture info to the end of the server path you already provided and copy and paste this info <b>between</b> the image tags, like this:

The example code tag isn't working so in the <b>real</b> code "pic" will be replaced with "img" and the result will look like this:

As you can see from the pictures of my undercarriage the red oxide was painted over with black paint. Can anyone tell from the pictures if this was original or was it done after the fact. Also, notice the red oxide on the stearing and sway bar? Aren't these supposed to be natural color?

    Any help appreciated. Gary
