I have been looking for a 1.08 4100 for my wife's '65 A-code for a little while. Earlier in the week I ran across someone selling 4 old Ford carbs. First of all they were completely mis-categorized as collectible dairy items. Secondly, they all had the same description. The seller obviously just cut and pasted. The description read:

This auction is for one Ford FMCO 4 Barrel Carburetor complete. Marked on base as C4AFD3. This has been stored on the shelf for many years and is ready to be rebuilt. This would fit from early 60's to mid 70's and has the same bolt pattern as the Holley Carb.

I couldn't find anything about a C4AFD3, but I figured it was for a galaxy or something. Anyway, one of the carbs looked promising. I emailed the seller and asked what the number (venturi size) was on the side of the carb. Not completely understanding, she emails me back:

Thanks for your interest, the numbers are:

    CARB #1 C4AFD3

    CARB #2 C3AFAV

    CARB #3 6ZC C6ZFC

    CARB #4 C5AFF

Holy Crap! When I saw #3 I almost fainted. I immediately went to the auction and looked more closely at the picture. I had ignored it because it didn't have a choke. Well, now I knew why. It even has the carb tag on it. Needless to say, I wanted it. There were two bidders who had bid it to $50. When there were two minutes left, I bid $200. I wound up getting it for $76.50 plus shipping.

I have no idea what I am going to do with it. It is too late in '66 for my '66 GT. I may keep it as a backup or sell it. Talk about getting lucky.

  • Great story! Have you ever used a sniper? The sniper will place your bid with about 5 seconds left, you can set it up in advance and not worry about missing the auction close. It's cheap and works great. Try "ezsniper.com" and there are others you can find by googling for "ebay sniper." Of course, as you know, you have to bid the max you're willing to pay to ensure you outbid the competition as you did on the carb. Great buy.

  • Well, my carb came in today and it is a real hipo carb. It is well used. The plastic secondary accelerator arm is also broken. Also, one of the holes in the foot seems oversized like it may have been drilled out at some time. All in all not bad for what I paid. It has the original tag which reads C6ZF C then B 5JD. 6ZC is stamped on the base. I guess I mis-interpreted the date originally as this decodes to September of '65, fourth week.

I don't know what I am going to do with it yet. I may send it off to be rebuilt and put in on my K-code so I can see how it performs relative to mine. If it makes a big difference, I may sell it and use the money to have mine rebuilt.

What does Pony charge for a basic non-concourse rebuild and how long does it take?

Oh, and I just got an email from the seller. It seems that someone who bought one of the other carbs isn't happy and didn't get the correct carb. Oh well, not my problem. I got the one I bid on and won which was the one pictured.
