Shipping a 4speed trans??

  • I have actually 2 transmissions I am going to sell, 1 is an RUG-AH Toploader 4speed for a 1969 Fairlane 351 application, the other is a HEF-CW 3speed toploader for a 1966 Mustang 289 application.

My question is how do I package these for safe shipping? I recently had MY HIPO toploader rebuilt by David Kee, and used his special container to ship mine both ways, that was very cool, but now selling my 2 used transmissions requires me to pack them up, any suggestions?

  • I received one that was simply rolled in cardboard (a couple of layers), then taped up. It survived, but not sure how.

I shipped one and went overboard I guess. I had a box a little larger than the trans. I strapped the trans to a sheet of plywood, slid it into the box, and then lined the inside of the box all around with packing material. I had some of that 1" thick foam insulation board, and used it all around the inside of the box. I put a piece of PVC over the input shaft and filled it with expanding foam (after covering trans shaft with a bag).

BTW, from my location, DHL was much cheaper than UPS or FedEx.

  • Do like the pros do: get a cardboard box big enough to hold the transmission; put a block of foam at the bottom of the box to hold the transmission up; place TWO large plastic bags around the transmission in a 'clamshell' fashions; place the transmission in the box and fill EAcH SIDE OF THE CLAMSHELL with spray foam so when the recipient cuts open the box, the transmission can be removed. Think about it, and make it work.

  • Thanks for the replies and suggestions!! any idea of how much the Fairlane 4speed with the cheapo Hurst Indy shifter would be worth as a core for rebuild?? (It has 1 ear broken off, but not into oil)
