well i have a larger 289 bell housing. 164 or something teeth. it has the same bolt pattern, same shape, but made of cast iron. someone here said it came off a truck or something. has a c5 number on it. the plate (engine to bellhousing) is slightly different between the two. the starter mounts about a half a bolt hole farther from the engine due to the larger fly wheel. hope this makes sense.

The Hipo and standard 289 Mustangs use the smaller C5DA 9384 A casting number aluminum bellhousing. This is for the 157 or 160 tooth flywheel. The reason that I mention both 157 and 160 tooth flywheels is that the flywheels are the same and the 160 tooth is original. In later years Ford changed to a 157 tooth ring gear as it meshed better with the starter than the 160 tooth version. Ford replacement ring gears were 157 tooth as well. The C5AA 6394 A casting number aluminum bellhousing is used on 65 Hipo and standard 289 Failanes and other Ford car applications with 164 tooth flywheels.
