Restoration Inquiry: 1965 K-Code Special Order (VIN 5T07K186219 - DSO 95)

  • Dear Tony and members of the HiPo Exchange,

I am returning to this community with a very exciting project. I am the owner of a highly unique 1965 Mustang K-Code, and I have finally decided to embark on a full Concours-level restoration to preserve its historical significance.

As some of you may know from the registry, this car is quite a "unicorn":

    • VIN: 5T07K186219 (Metuchen build)
    • Engine: Factory 289 Hi-Po (271 hp)
    • DSO: 95 with a 6-digit special order code

Being a DSO 95 (Export) vehicle built in Metuchen with a 6-digit special order code, it is one of the few high-performance units destined for the foreign market with non-standard specifications. My goal is a "Thoroughbred" or "Gold" class restoration, staying absolutely faithful to how it left the assembly line in 1965, including factory-correct overspray, crayon marks, and date-coded components.

I am particularly interested in the work of Denis Frances (Danville, VA), whose reputation for restoring K-Code Mustangs to world-class standards is legendary within the MCA community.

Could anyone provide advice on the best way to reach out to Denis for such a project? I am also looking to verify if any specific documentation or "Build Sheets" for this VIN have surfaced in private collections that could assist in documenting its special order features.

I appreciate any help, guidance, or leads you can provide to ensure this rare Metuchen Hi-Po is restored to its former glory.

    Best regards,

    lankri

  • lankri, great to hear from you here. I do like to document kcode vins in a database I have. Would you happen to know if your kar has the original engine and transmission? If so, did you verify by checking the original vin stamps on those parts?

  • Is mine in the T5 registry?

    5F08K600096

Yes, yours in in the registry. It is one of a very few that has no location listed when it was added to the registry.

I had 6T08K107076, which is now in a museum in Switzerland.

  • what Ford plants made T5's?

    did all of them ?

Early 1965 T5's were built in Dearborn. Beginning in July of 1965, the T5 production was at Metucheon. The 1970 model year started back at Dearborn until August 1969 and then back to Metucheon until the 1971 model year. Beginning in the 1971 model year until the end in 1979, the production shifted back to Dearborn. Is this confusing enough for you? :)
