I've seen standard interior 65's with the 5 Gauge cluster and a black bezel. But the long style was standard in 65. Was the 5 gauge an option or did it come about in K codes at a certain date in production?
5 Gauge cluster in 1965?

Seems to have been asked a recently on a number of sites/forums. Not an option and the use of it would require modifications to the body, electrical systems and other supporting parts of the car,
Just because you see them on the internet does not in any way mean they came that way originally. Plenty of owners didn't like having lights instead of gauges so not a rare modification

Wouldn't a 1965 GT with standard interior have the 5 gauge black cluster?

The black bezel 5 gauge cluster was used on 65 GT standard interior cars only. To be a GT, the engine needed to be either an "A" code or a "K" code. Jeff is correct as the dash opening is different along with much of the wiring.

I've been messing 65-66 Mustangs since I was 12. So that's 45 years. I have never noticed a difference in the steel dash opening. I've put 5 gauge clusters into 65's with no problems, except modifying the wiring. I did a google search and got no results on any pics either.

The dash opening on 1965 model year GT and pony interior 5 gauge clusters have a stamped in relief in the opening below the speedometer. It conforms to the speedometer so that the cluster can sit down in the proper position. It has a rolled edge rather than being cut as people would do to install the 5 gauge cluster in a standard dash opening. All 1966 models have this relief area.

Guess google didn't find everything. To help with that here is a picture of two K codes. Upper pictures if of the gauge opening on a standard interior car from the 5R1104xx range and the bottom from a GT and or a Deluxe interior car from the 5R223xxx range. Could have found other engine sizes but since you were specific about K codes I found two of those examples because that was what you asked about in your original post. Notice the somewhat circular cutting out below the large centered speedo in the bottom example.
Hope the pictures shows. If not click on the code

Well thanks! You are never too old to learn something. I have a 5 gauge that I put in my 65. I better take the grinder with a course flap disc and recreate that so it sits right.
