For first-generation Mustangs, it doesn’t get much better than a convertible loaded with the GT Equipment Group, Décor (Pony) Interior Group and K-code 289 High Performance engine. This triple black 1966 example is also equipped with a 4-speed transmission, styled steel wheels, a center console and AM/8-track stereo. The dual redline tires look sharp matching the red rocker-panel stripes on the black background. As found on all K-code 1965-66 Mustangs, the small, checkered-flag “High Performance” plates added behind the 289 fender emblems are the only HiPo exterior identification. A five-year restoration of this GT was completed in 2019 utilizing the original sheet metal and date-code-correct 289 HiPo small-block, which has been immaculately detailed with Ford Corporate Blue engine paint, chrome valve covers, correct fuel line, numbered spark plug wires, decals and markings. Underneath, the Mustang exhibits the factory-correct red-oxide primer with exterior paint overspray. Factory markings and VIN stamps remain intact. As a GT, the convertible is equipped with fog lamps, dual trumpet exhaust tips through the rear valance, GT gas cap, side stripes, cloisonné GT front fender emblems, front disc brakes and Special Handling Package. The black bucket-seat Pony interior is stunning with its unique seat upholstery that features embossed running horses in the seat backs, along with woodgrain trim, molded door panels and wood-rim steering wheel. The “K” as the fifth digit in the VIN confirms this convertible’s status as factory-equipped with the 289/271 HP High Performance engine, the top-of-the-line option that featured a solid-lifter camshaft, unique cylinder heads with heavy-duty valve springs and slotted pushrod holes, an Autolite 4-barrel carburetor, open-element chrome air cleaner, dual-point distributor and free-flowing exhaust manifolds. Finished in its factory Raven Black paint, this K-code GT convertible comes with the Elvis Christmas Album 8-track tape that was found in the car prior to its restoration
