Here is an Ebay auction for a pair of used C4OE heads by Ebay member "flyingfred" with a Buy-It-Now of $2,250.00:

[size=4]This is an unmolested matching pair of Hipo 289 cylinder heads for Hipo 289 Fairlanes, Mustangs, Shelby GT350, Cobra, TVR Griffith and very rare Hipo Comets. They will work fine on all 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967 HIPO 289 engines but the date code and lower casting numbers will be incorrect for all but 1964. These heads have been inspected and are crack free and have had a valve job so they are ready to install on your Hipo 289. All original without any porting or repairs. These are extremely rare HIPO heads with the C4OE casting numbers on the bottom. These are correct original factory assembly line installed heads for 1964, not to be confused with the later incorrectly marked Ford service replacement heads. Matched pair with same 4C24 date codes and 21 casting numbers on upper corners. I have had these stored in the garage for many years, but have no need for them, so would like to see them go to someone who can use them. Shipping will be by FedEx, so no PO boxes please. These used bare C4OE heads are dated too early for any of our Kars but I posted these just to show the trend in Hipo head sales.

I have seen and had many of these C4OE heads and they were always dated 4C24 leading me to believe that all of them were cast the same day. All of these that I have seen and had in hand used the earlier smaller intake valves. The next day would be the new configuration C5OE heads.

Heads were only recently overhauled - see invoice and parts list -, surfaces sanded. Valves newly fitted and sealed, springs renewed etc.

The C4OE prefix head casting was introduced about late May 1964 and used in new engines for 1964 Fairlanes and 1965 Cobras with engines made the last weeks of 1964 engine production. I am on the road today and do not have access to all my files but Ford made an lot of changes about the second week of May 1964 in preparation to start the completion of 1965 Mustangs with HP289 engines for a planned start the first week of June 1964. Late 1964 Fairlanes had a new version of automatic transmission HP engine and two versions of High Performance C4 transmissions were available. C40F-AL carburetors were introduced for all three car families with manual transmission. The Fairlane engine for automatic transmissions received the C4OF-AT carburetor unique to automatic transmission HP289 engines.

From memory, the earliest engine with a C4OF-AL carburetor we have recorded was assembled in Cleveland May 15, 1964, The latest regular production 1964 HP289 engine were had recorded was assembled in July 11, 1964 and the earliest 1965 specification engine we have recorded was assembled July 13, 1964 (from memory).

Every C4OE prefix casting I have seen pictures of of had was cast during one of two days in March 1964. We have two late in 1964 production engines that came new with them. I had a spare set of heads but sold them to a Cobra owner.

The trouble I had doing research beyond what has been published was that there were also C5OE heads in use for Mustangs and very few engines are just not being dismantled for the first time. We have some very limited information recorded for engines made at the end of the 1964 engine production model year in 1965 Mustangs,

There are still lots of questions about engines and their components made in Cleveland between about May 15 and July II as there was no longer just one type of HP289 final assembly made.

Ford sold a large quantity of the C4OE castings to Crane Cams. They race prepared them and resold them.
