So I saw a green/gold GT350 last evening......it had outboard driving/headlights....owner said the large " Z " on the original ? vin tag indicated the peculiar arrangement of the lights . Car quite original, nice patina, he swapped the engine out to preserve it, had a 302... but big dampner, pulley, etc., ...just wondering if anyone can authenticate the " Z "?![]()

Duncan, I don't think anyone knows for sure what the "Z" stamped in the 67 Shelby VIN tag means for sure. At first people thought it was the arrangement of the center lights but that doesn't seem to be the case. There's some discussion about this on the Shelby Forum (links below), I thought there was some on the SAAC Forum as well but couldn't find it.

I believe the general feeling is that cars that were standing at LAX
for months got rust on bumpers, faded paint on the fiber glass or other problems and those cars got a Z marked when they had been checked and fixed.
My 67 has a Z and it was standing at LAX from the ready date in May 67 to October 67 when it was sold and delivered to a dealer in L.A.

The owner claimed his was among the last LAX cars, and that they used it for some promotional " race car " rides, that it was fitted with a " comp " engine, painted red, and that this car was used to take some children with disability for a ride in a race car. Carroll was supposed to have driven it himself for thes events. Who's to know...
