Rear End Ratio Woes...

  • Your Kar would originally have a 1310 size U-joint and not a 1330. The 1330 U-joints were used in big block and Boss cars but not 65/66 Hipo Kars. You might want to recheck your measurements. Of course it is always possible that someone upgraded your Kar to 1330 U-joints in the past. I know that I have made the upgrade before myself.

Thanks (again) for the heads up, Fred. I actually wrote a rather lengthy reply to your post that somehow got munched when I tried to post it. I don't feel like retyping the whole thing at 11:30 PM.

Short story: I had planned on remeasuring EVERYTHING before I order tomorrow AM. I'll report back, and I'm way bummed my last post got munched.

  • Yoke measurements are in.

    Overall length is 4 1/2"

    Cup diameter is 1 1/8"

width from cup to cup is approximately 3.2"

    Based on this link:

    http://www.metropartsmarket.com/rearend/measure.html

it would appear that Fred is indeed correct (imagine my shock), and I have the 1310 yoke. I don't understand why I'm getting a 1 1/8" measurement on the cup, though. Is the above web page WRONG? (it wouldn't be the first time). Anyone know?

  • UPDATE...

I'm a go with a new third member with 3.50 gears. I should have it in a few days. Other than borrowing a slide hammer to remove the axles, the only other thing I need to procure is a new speedo gear. I know they are easily available online.

Does anyone remember what speedo gear they are using with the 3.50 gear set? My car is being converted over from 4.11, and has 25" diameter tires.

Gerry, According to the Ford parts book you will need a C2DZ 17271 G which has 17 teeth. You should have a 20 tooth gear at present with your 4.11 gears. If you need one, you can contact me as I do have one.

Thanks Fred. Actually, I need to put together an order for my parts vendor, so I'm okay with getting the gear. I appreciate the offer, though. Also, per Coker tire, my tires are actually 25.3" in diameter (correcting what I posted previously). Per David Kee's website, I most likely have the pink 6 tooth drive gear in my tranny, which is okay with the new 3.50 gear set. See here:

I came to 17 teeth also with this handy link I found, for anyone who is interested:

    http://www.sccoa.com/faq/speedgr.html

I think I'm good to go here. Thanks to everyone for their input! I'll report back when my Pony's "longer legs" are installed.

    Thanks guys!

  • Hey, maniacs...

Well, the 3.50:1 gear ratio and 17 tooth speedo gear are officially installed. Third member was purchased from:

    [Blocked Image: http://i28.tinypic.com/2eyvxwm.jpg]

Delivery took two days (to CT). Third member was packed in a milk crate, tie wrapped in, and wrapped in cardboard and duct tape. Nice packaging, and easy to carry around, since milk crates have handles.

Support was good. I found TJ to be a VERY nice guy, typical of motorheads from PA. He asked all the right questions about my application ("Are you SURE you don't have an 8"? Most Mustangs have 8" rears, you know..."), what yoke I had, etc. He tries to ship the SAME DAY he gets the order, for those in a hurry. Also, he's a handshake deal kinda guy ("well, if you want to send me a check, I won't hold you up. I'm still shipping your unit today, so you don't have to wait"), which is rare these days. All and all, a pleasant experience. Give this dude some business, if you're shopping rears...

Installation was straight forward and easy. I even made a tag for it.

I LOVE this new gear set. Now, instead of shifting into 4th at 40MPH, it's more like 50 or 55MPH. Car still has LOTS of power in the upper ranges, even with the taller gears. Good purchase.

I'm a very happy camper here. Thanx for all the input, guys. I hope others who are considering changing their rear end ratio find this thread to be helpful.

  • I seem to be in the minority, but I have 3.25's and C-4, which seems balanced for cruisin' and a spot of runnin' hard from 20 mph and up.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
