    He shoots... AIR BALL!

    Well, bummer.

The valve covers were not as advertised. They were closed letter die cast wrinkled black painted units, as opposed to open letter Buddy Bars, which is what was represented to me.

Also, he did NOT have the box. He said he used the box to ship some parts to TN.

The valve covers were brand spanking new, with very minor shelf wear. I don't know enough about the die cast ones to know what I'm looking at. I could NOT find any kind of Ford part number on the units, so without the box, I'd say they're worthless.

Also, his story changed from 1967 to "the box said 1970 or 1972 or something like that."

Oh well. It was worth the trip to check out. Besides, I got to hear the '65 Comet Cyclone grill story, which was worth the price of admission.

As some of you may know, I'm currently breaking in a motor I built for my Sunbeam Tiger in my HiPo car.

Part of this little project originally was to give me the opportunity to detail my HiPo motor while it was out of the car. Well... It turns out it needs more than detailing, and the motor is completely disassembled, and ready to go to the machine shop.

The cam and lifters are HOSED. I plan on putting a Comp Cams Ford 289-302 Nostalgia Plus N+271H Cam, part# 31-670-4 in it, as I did with the motor I built for the Tiger. I REALLY like this cam, and I'm sick of messing with mechanical lifters, quite frankly, so a change is in order.

This cam is available in a "kit" which I bought for my last motor, that comes with springs, keepers, seals, lifters, and a timing chain. I called the Comp Cams help line with 2 simple questions, which the bonehead who answered the phone (after me being on hold for 20 minutes) couldn't answer. Some of these "experts" amaze me. He knew NOTHING about HiPos. All I got from him was "A 289 is a 289 is a 289." Finally, I just hung up on him, since I know I can get better answers here. Here goes:

    1. Does anyone know of a roller timing chain that has the thinner crank gear to accomodate the HiPo oil slinger? If not, can I turn a roller crank gear down to get the proper clearances for it? I'm tempted to buy a roller set, and just put my hatchet and gears in a box on the shelf.

    2. Comp Cams says you need to change your springs when using this cam. "Mr. Helpful" wasn't able to tell me if the HiPo springs are adequate to use, since "All 289s are the same." I would imagine the stock HiPo springs are more than okay for this application.

    The dollar difference is substantial.

    Any input?

Fate can be a funny thing. I'm glad I waited to pull over for lunch.

So, I'm out exercising my 1965 Konvertible today, after doing an oil change, and tightening up the new KYB gas shocks. Perfect weather. Led Zeppelin II playing on the tape deck LOUDLY. Top down, of course.

While I'm driving and daydreaming, I start running through in my head the very SMALL punch list of things left to do to my car for this season. I remembered that I still hadn't checked the tire pressures, and now was a good time to get the tires topped off, with the new KYBs and all...

I'm at a gas station out in the middle of nowhere to get some air. A few people around the car asking questions about it as I air up, mechanics and a few customers. You guys know the drill. I popped the hood for them.

All of a sudden, this dude from a lawn service truck comes over and starts asking me the usual questions. We chit chat for a while. Then he says "Are you interested in a NEW IN THE FORD BOXES set of open letter Cobra aluminum valve covers from 1967?"

    I'm like "Uhhhm....Sure."

Dude is into Model T's, and the valve covers came in a boatload of Model T parts he got from the estate of some Model T dude who died. He also said "It's got a sticker in the box, too, just like this one (pointing to my air cleaner). A hundred bucks for them?"

I'm meeting with him tomorrow to do the exchange. I also Emailed him to check in his Model T parts to see if he has the HiPo air cleaner, as obviously (because of the sticker) these valve covers are part of the "dress up kit."

    Wish me luck.

    If I score, pictures tomorrow. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

    Hey, maniacs...

Well, the 3.50:1 gear ratio and 17 tooth speedo gear are officially installed. Third member was purchased from:

    [Blocked Image: http://i28.tinypic.com/2eyvxwm.jpg]

Delivery took two days (to CT). Third member was packed in a milk crate, tie wrapped in, and wrapped in cardboard and duct tape. Nice packaging, and easy to carry around, since milk crates have handles.

Support was good. I found TJ to be a VERY nice guy, typical of motorheads from PA. He asked all the right questions about my application ("Are you SURE you don't have an 8"? Most Mustangs have 8" rears, you know..."), what yoke I had, etc. He tries to ship the SAME DAY he gets the order, for those in a hurry. Also, he's a handshake deal kinda guy ("well, if you want to send me a check, I won't hold you up. I'm still shipping your unit today, so you don't have to wait"), which is rare these days. All and all, a pleasant experience. Give this dude some business, if you're shopping rears...

Installation was straight forward and easy. I even made a tag for it.

I LOVE this new gear set. Now, instead of shifting into 4th at 40MPH, it's more like 50 or 55MPH. Car still has LOTS of power in the upper ranges, even with the taller gears. Good purchase.

I'm a very happy camper here. Thanx for all the input, guys. I hope others who are considering changing their rear end ratio find this thread to be helpful.

    Gerry

With out lifting a finger (at my end), I'd say contact "Larry's Thunderbird and Mustang Parts" in Fullerton, CA. I've done business with these dudes since the mid 70's. I'd bet they can point you in the right direction.

Awesome collection!!! Thank you for sharing. Hard to pick a favorite of the 3 there...

You're right. They are all so TOTALLY different on so many different levels.

    <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>

Nice collection of small block Fords...Can't beat the colors, either. Gotta love the sound of an American V-8 in a small British sports car.

    Thank you. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

The sound of an American V-8 in a small British sports car you say???

    *PERK*

I'll even throw in a pretty girl as an added bonus.

Check out my girlfriend Jennifer learning to drive stick in the Sunbeam Tiger. Volume up, please, and by all means, enjoy the visuals. I sure do.

    Hi, David...

I don't know didley about the MSD box (I'm sure others will chime in about it), but if you're new to Rally Pacs, you need to remember that since the Rally Pac tach is wired in series with the coil, if it fails, your car dies. This is NOT an uncommon occurance for a 40+ year old electrical part. Maybe the MSD box changes this dreaded tach wiring. Someone on here will know...

I've had this happen to me, as I'm sure others on here have as well. When you hook the Rally Pac tach up, it's good to route the tach wires for easy access under the ignition switch. This way, if it fails, you can just reach under the dash and jump the tach out of the circuit, and you are back on your way in no time.

    BTW, I'm in Stamford, CT

    Gerry

Thanks, Fred. I'll also be posting some pics in the next few days of the new Tiger motor on the stand, and also installed in the red 'Stang, pictures of the HiPo motor from the 'Stang on the stand, and some pics of the Shelby resto in progress.

    Glad you enjoyed!<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

    Gerry

    Well...

It's probably time I learn how to post pics on here. Not to mention the fact that this is, of course, the PERFECT target audience to show off a few of my rides. [Blocked Image: http://i31.tinypic.com/27zhqpw.jpg]

Here's a few of my 1966 Shelby GT-350 Owned since 1985. This car was my first major purchase out of college, and I totally drove the wheels off of it. As a result, it is currently out being restored. Note the license plate. [Blocked Image: http://i30.tinypic.com/2qs3sba.jpg]

Here's a few of my 1966 Sunbeam Tiger, 260, toploader 4 speed, VERY quick, nimble, and an absolute GAS to drive. Mediterranean Blue, with LAT 70 wheels. Also, note the '65 Shelby steering wheel, and the custom stainless steel center cap I had made for it. Owned since 1991. :

Gerry, According to the Ford parts book you will need a C2DZ 17271 G which has 17 teeth. You should have a 20 tooth gear at present with your 4.11 gears. If you need one, you can contact me as I do have one.

    <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

Thanks Fred. Actually, I need to put together an order for my parts vendor, so I'm okay with getting the gear. I appreciate the offer, though. Also, per Coker tire, my tires are actually 25.3" in diameter (correcting what I posted previously). Per David Kee's website, I most likely have the pink 6 tooth drive gear in my tranny, which is okay with the new 3.50 gear set. See here:

    http://4speedtoploaders.com/shopsite_sc/st…metergears.html

I came to 17 teeth also with this handy link I found, for anyone who is interested:

I think I'm good to go here. Thanks to everyone for their input! I'll report back when my Pony's "longer legs" are installed.

    Thanks guys!

It's not a Shelby, at least not the same one that was converted by Shelby American in 1966. In my opinion, this car is nothing more than a K code with Shelby parts, or simply a Shelby clone. If it was my car, the Shelby tag would come off and be sent to SAAC and indicate to them that the original car was destroyed.

    <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana" size=2 id=quote>

I TOTALLY agree with everything except sending the tag to SAAC. I'd rivet it to my Really Really Big Red Tool Box (which has it's own gravitational pull).

    UPDATE...

I'm a go with a new third member with 3.50 gears. I should have it in a few days. Other than borrowing a slide hammer to remove the axles, the only other thing I need to procure is a new speedo gear. I know they are easily available online.

Does anyone remember what speedo gear they are using with the 3.50 gear set? My car is being converted over from 4.11, and has 25" diameter tires.
