• I am considering getting a reproduction set of 14x6 Hurst Wheels for my '65 "K" convertible that is being restored.

Were these wheels popular on Mustangs back when they first came out? think they would look right on a concours restored '65 "K" GT convertible? are the repros ok? are they authentic looking? opinions please!

  • My opinion is that these wheels suit GM cars better than Mustangs. I don't think they would look quite right on a K.

I wasn't alive when they first came out, but I think they were very popular on Oldsmobiles and Pontiacs.

The 65 Shelby style Cragers would be more appropriate.

  • I too associate the Hurst wheel design with GM vehicles.

Around north Alabama the Cragar S/S wheels were very popular as were the Keytsone Klassics (spelling??). I always thought the Cragar S/S wheels looked great and I have seen some 15X6 ones on a late 1965 GT350.

  • If your not restoring the car or if you want to play the "available option" game you might want to consider the Cragers since it's a 65. IF not that particular 66 ten spokes look really nice in most cases IMHO

But can not recall ever seeing a set of Hurst wheels on a Mustang during the era. Cragars, American spokes, chrome reversed wheels (and later daisy or dished) were much more common

  • This is what I kind of suspected.

My friend has a '67 GTO and HIS friend has reatored about 20 sets of ORIGINAL Hurst Wheels, and made a small fortune doing it!!

He has had MANY a set re-bushed to GM bolt pattern from Ford and Chrysler.

Anyway....thanks for the imput, I will be running the proper black painted slot SS wheels in 14x5 on my "K"!!

  • As others have said, Hurst wheels are associated with GM products, specifically early GTO's, more so than any other model. I have never seen a set of Hurst wheels on an early Mustang in person, although I do remember one K coupe that sold a few years ago on eBay that had the Hurst wheels on them.

I have looked closely at the reproduction Hurst wheels and while there are differences between the repos and originals, the repos look very nice. There is a BIG difference between repos and originals in the price.

  • Try some Radir Tri-Rib wheels. They are completely correct for the vintage and I have seen 1965 Mustang ads with those wheels on the car. My son put a set of 15x6's on his '65 Fastback with bias plys and they look awesome.
