C3AE-D is the correct casting number for hipo rods. Looks like the real thing to me. Being who the seller is I'm sure they have a pretty reserve.

Thanks. Isn't there meant to be material protruding from the top of the rod? That's what the photos in Tony Gregory's book show.

The metal protruding from the top varies with whatever balancing had to be done for the rods to match each other. It can be ground off to a degree depending on who did the balancing.

Thanks Fred. That's what I thought. But on these rods there doesn't appear to be any material left at all. Is it normal to remove almost all the material on the top for balancing?

Yes, there are times that most of the material will be taken off if necessary for balancing.
