Manual Choke and Stamped Firewall hole

  • Hello All,

I have a question for the Kommunity. First off I have searched the site but did not find anything specific answering my question/issue. I have a question that could open up a can of worms regarding my K Code Coupe. First off, the car is a Metuchan Coupe that appears to be relatively complete. It is an 01R (April 1st Build). Now my car appears to have all the correct indicators of being a true K-Code including engine with all goodies (not serialized), serialized transmission, date codes appear good......BUT, the hole through the firewall where the manual choke feeds through was manually crafted. Could the factory had an oversight and not have put the correct firewall panel in the vehical? Does this mean the car might have been rebodied with a non-K body?? To be honest, I am not exactly sure where the hole is supposed to be. The book has a note as to where it should be but there does not appear to be a hole in my firewall for the choke. How bad is this. By the way, my car has correct vin stamped, on both inner fenders, is titled, have the build sheet, has correct snubber plate, correct exhaust plates, break line offset, etc etc....just does not have the hole in the firewall. I have a spare parts car with what might appear to be a hole to the left of the master and above the accelerator linkage.

Tried to send a pic of that spare parts car firewall, not sure if it is attached...

Just looking for some input as to if this inconsistency has ever been reported or if this would lead to more clues to the actual authenticity of this car being as original as I would like.

    Welcome any and all feedback

  • I believe it is a common misconception that holes such as the choke cable hole and also fog light wiring holes were stamped. After inspecting these closely on original cars, I believe they were drilled out with a hole saw. The type of hole saw leaves an edge on the back of the holes.

  • That is good to hear. I like that theory.

So if these were manually drilled I would think that based on factory, the shift, or even down to the worker the hole might have been cut in different places? Mine is right above the accelerator linkage.

Is there a typical or more common location?? I have seen at least one K code with the choke fed through a hole between the shock tower support braces just below the cowl/firewall seam.

  • I would agree with Charles. My 13R Dearborn FB has what appears to be a drilled hole for the choke cable. All three apron VINS are present.

Also the radiator support has only one foglight hole - on the pass side. this has the original wire protector and no raised edge from stamping.

  • Glad to hear there is concensus.

As far as location does anyone have a picture of where the hole "should" be. Again, I have two 65 coupes. A parts car and my primary project.

Are there documented differences in the locations where the choke hole was drilled depending on factory or assembly person???

    Food for thought:

My parts car has the hole just over the accelerator linkage bracket and oriented towards the passenger door edge of the bracket. (This is a June car from dearborn)

My primary project car has the choke fed through a hole drilled between the shock tower support braces. (This is an April 01 car from Metuchen)

If anyone has a picture of where the choke "should be" please send to kcb09@aol.com.

    Just curious.

    Andy
