build date V sheet metal dates

  • My 64.5 coupe has a July 9 build date on the original door tag but the sheet metal shows all late July dates. The latest being 7-29 that I could find. Is it possible that Ford was that far behind? The car has been apart for years but the metal is original. The numbers were taken from the cowl area and inner fender parts, not fenders, doors etc. What is the explanation?

  • Keep in mind that the 'DATE' field on the warranty tag is simple a scheduled build date. The actual date could be days to weeks before or after. Cars that required unique options sometimes lagged behind on the actual build date.

As far as sheet metal date codes, you will find that most of the bolt-on stuff will be 1-3 weeks before the car was built and the rest of the car being a week to 3 months on some of the inner structure of the unibody.
