boss 302 , K code comparison

  • Can someone please post the specs for the OEM Boss 302 camshaft? I know that some people have swapped the Boss 302 cam for a K code cam and was curious what the differences were exactly. Thanks.

  • found this on another forum:

"I have found that they are 290 degrees "advertised" duration with .477" lift"

"OK found the specs of the factory boss 302 cam. 228 duration @.050'', .477 lift and 114 ICL."

I think I read in a 1977 Crane Cams book that a K cam is about 224 @.050 but it did not list the lobe sep.

  • Here are some more specs.

    289 Hipo: In. 310 Deg.(advertised) / Ex. 310 deg. (advertised)

    .450 Lift 82 Deg overlap

in. open 12atc cloce 26 abc

    ex. open 36bbc close 22btc

    302 Boss: 290 Deg. (advertised)/ 290 Deg. (advertised)

    Lift (.290 lobe).477

    In. open .014 @ 40btc / Closes .014 @ 80abc

    Ex. open .014 @ 84bbc / Closes .014 @ 36 at

Hipo specs from Muscle parts and Boss from 1970 Ford Shop Manual.

The specs are hard to compare since they are from differant sorces, but basically the hipo has more duration and the boss has more lift. I hope this helps. Tom

  • I found a better comparison in an early 1970's Off Highway Parts book for service parts cams.

    289HP.019 lash 46BTC 84ABC 94BBC 36ATC 310/310 lift .298/.460 82 overlap

    Boss: .025 lash 34BTC 76ABC 86BBC 24ATC 290/290 lift .290/.477 58 overlap

289 Hipo uses 1.6 rockers and the Boss 302 uses 1.73 rockers. Some sources list 289HP lash as .018 intake/.020 exaust.
