BLOCK CASTING DATE QUESTION

  • I have a block with a casting date of 6H5, August 5th 66 in a 66 fastback with a earlier, Sept 65 build date. A previous owner said that the engine had been short blocked in 1973 at a small Ford dealership. It has a small aluminum tag attached to the block, that is totally blank. I think that this was possibly an AER reman tag, but not certain. The original build date is not there or the original serial number. Although it appears to be a k block with the right pieces. Question is this, with this casting date would this be considered an engine originally built for a 1966 or a 1967 car. Are there other identifiers that might provide a clue to this? Thanks.

  • This is definitely a 67 dated block. Even though the build date has been surfaced off of the upper left front tab, there still should be the same build date stamped onto the pan rail under the gasket on the passenger side near the rear. It is in approximately the same position as the casting date code.

  • Fred, as soon as I read your reply, I rushed right out and removed the pan gasket and found much to my disappointment 6H8C stamped in the inner side of the pan rail of the block with another C stamped upside down toward the other pan rail in the same general location.

So was this engine built by the third shift designated to become a 2v engine? There is also a P on the opposite pan rail that appears to be partially off the rail with a second P near the center below the first with a V closer to the rear main. Thanks Mike

  • Al,

Your 6H8 is the date and the "C" does not denote a 2V engine. That letter is thought to be an inspector code and they run throuhout the alphabet on these. The other letter stampings are sizing stamps for fitting pistons as far as I know.
