Tips on installing shock towers

  • Had my shock towers blasted and powder coated. I don't remember having trouble getting them off, but I sure can't get them on easily. I finally muscled one on, but can't get the second on. The two flat bolts that slip underneath closest to the fender won't go in far enough. I'm using new SS hardware from AMK. I even tried my old rusty ones and those don't seem to fit anymore either. Whatever rubber gasket/sealer is in there is getting in the way. Any tips?

    Thanks,

  • You are probably being hindered by the spring insulator. The tower bolts can be centered and aligned with a punch before you install the tower using the tower as a guide. You can put a floor jack under the control arm and jack the car up a bit and it will give you some play in the shock. You can also unbolt the shock at the upper A arm. Either way will give you more room to work under the shock.

  • Yep. Tried the jacking trick last night with no luck. Even scraped out some of the insulator. I ended up using the original bolts and got it to work. Had to clean them up quite a bit. I put the new SS locking washer on so it still looks fresh.

  • Troy - from the pictures you posted, it looks like you got them on. What was the resolution? I had similar problems, but do not recall all of the answers. I do know that the AMK nuts would not work with Koni shocks and that I had to jack it up to align the export brace, but do not remember the answer to the washer fit problem at the towers.
