HIPO Ignition wires

  • In nearing completion of my restoration we are finding out that the reproduction wires that I bought from NPD are a little too long.

I understand that Marti made these wires, and it has been suggested that perhaps they were mis-marked and were actually made for a different engine and marked with all the proper numbers for a 1965 Hipo engine.

Has anyone else discovered this? I bought these wires 8 months ago from NPD in Florida.

  • I've had two different sets, one from about 20+ yrs ago and a brand new Marti set. They both seem slightly too long. I've noticed that the earlier set has larger lettering than the Marti set and the coil cap is different (the older one was vertical, the Marti one was horizontal). If you look in the Skrap book you can see pictures of the older set.

  • OK, Thanks!!! I wonder if there is any way to shorten the wires satisfactorially (sp) I know years ago that there were tools on the market and the fittings available so folks could make their own wires-kind of a crimper type tool, its my guess that Marti's quality control has gotten out of hand just like lots of reproduction manufacturers out there, its kind of hard to keep the quality up paying people minimum wages to do this type of work.

  • You can buy the high quality 90 degree ends and the appropriate crimping plier from any NAPA store.

They also sell a straight equivalent. You have to strip the insulation, fold over the wire, then crimp it. Used these for years and they are great.

I couldn't find the plier on the NAPA site, but here is an image of the plier you need from the Snap-On site.

I have Marti wires on my car and they fit like a glove out of the package. Not sure what issue you are having with respect to them being too long. Have you tried calling Kevin and asking him about it?

  • Thanks!!! This is great!!!! I only have seen pictures of my engine with the repro wires installed and they do look a little long but not gross, I guess I'm kind of used to seeing the result of even a high-quality "exact-fit" wire set from the discount chains installed on every day drivers anymore.

What I am wondering now is CAN we cut the wires down without comprimising the lettering or number that is stamped on them.

I sure will check NAPA out!!
