Steering box HCC AX versus HCC-AW

  • I have been reading up on Hi-po's and trying to discover variations and I noticed everything says that HIPO's came with the quick ratio 16:1. The HIPO book only mentions HCC-AX but my Mustang Red Book also lists a HCC-AW also as a quick ratio box for 65. I have also seen a K-code with the AW box- it sounds like HIPO's in 65 then could have the HCC-AX or HCC-AW box.

  • Hi,

-AX is for manual steering and -AW for power

steering. The only difference, to my knowledge,

    is the pre-load setting.

If you use the search function you will find

a lot of information about this topic from

    earlier posts.

  • Randy Meyer at Precision Products is the most knowledgable guy I've run across and should be able to tell you in detail. He rebuilds Mustang boxes for many of the larger Mustang supply houses. You can reach him here:

He did mine for $130 including all parts & labor, and did an excellent job. He runs the "Stangers" site too.

BTW: for anyone doing proportioning valve work there is a link on his home page to some very detailed rebuilding information for the KH valves, both early and late.
