4th edition - frame rail plates

  • Build date 12/30/64: My car has the rear end bumper plate referred to in the 4th edition on page 89 as HiPo variation #1 found on early cars through 65. The exhaust system is shown on page 75 and is listed as very early 65.. The car also has the rear seat exhaust support plates shown on page 88, which are required for the early exhaust system.

The first image shows the inside of the old frame rail and the exhaust support plate. The second image shows the one I made up and installed in a new rail. The car was made on October 1st, 1964 and the car had a transverse muffler.

No, your image simply shows the 2 reinforcements for the rear hold-down plates.

The later GT style reinforcements are closer to the hole.

Charles is correct. Here are pictures of one of my frame rails before and after...

After relocating the exhaust support to the new frame rail:

Of course this doesn't apply to the subject at hand for early kars...

  • I've often wondered what the rear framerail plates were. I've never been able to find them on my car. According to the original owner it had the transverse muffler originally and was changed to regular duals to make room for a trailer hitch. My car was built Oct. 16, 1964 in San Jose.

Out of curiosity for the cars that don't have the frame rail plates. What snubber bumper plate is welded to the floor pan?

    Is that an exhaust clamp around the LH shock?! <img src=images/icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Whatever it is, it kept the "helper" spring in place so that (with the help of the ladder bars shown earlier in this thread) the 8" wide reverse-offset rims had room to stick out under the fender lip. The car still bottomed out on bumps! I'll be going back to stock Syled Steel wheels, dual redlines, and much less rear altitude.

    b9folk,

I commonly call that setup the poormans air shock system!! I think you'll be happy getting that tire back into the wheelwell again.

Hey, that's BETTER than air shocks, probably less likely to push the shocks through the trunk floor... lol

  • Mine is early Febuary 65 and does not have the plate. It definatly was a gut check when I put my finger in the hole and it wasnt there. I have a 66 GT fastback and I knew what it was already. Every thing else checks out on my K code so this is a relief. Dave Im sorry I wasnt paying atention
