Did these come with A/C

  • Hi,

Just to clarify and to ensure this is not a blanket statement. The 64-5-6 aka early a/c equipped Mustangs were under dash units....and could be considered optional on any car/engine combination-and installed by the selling dealer,if the customer had the money. The first year "Factory" a/c was offered was 1967--and it was available with the K code engine-Very few were built, and so far all I have seen have been the aluminium compressor--not the cast iron type.

It would be easy to remove from this 65,And you should not let it affect the overall rating of this car IMHO..it looks to be a decent car.

  • My K had dealer installed air - can't prove it, but the way it was installed and the May '65 date stamp on the back of the under dash unit - car is an April Dearborn car - sold new in OKC in late July '65 - I am pretty sure it has been there since new. I've spoken to owners back to '73 and it was there then. Before that no calls have been returned from names on my title search and the FoMoCo dealer is long gone.

I still have all the pieces including the aftermarket MAPCO cast iron crank pulley that fits the HiPo damper. It will not however be going back in the car because I cannot prove when it was originally there and because in my opinion it hurts the value of the car - and the experience - it didn't work when I got the car and so I never enjoyed the cold air - it won't be any fun driving it again if I don't sweat a little.

PS - there are a LOT of details on this car that are WRONG for a '65.

Nice to see a clone of my car though - Raven black with red interior - this is the first 2+2 I've seen with this color combo besides mine.

  • I own a very early 65 (Nov 64) Conv. which has 59K original miles on it. The car also has factory Air. I traced the car back to the dealership in which it was sold from and talked to the owners Son (who was very familiar with the car because it had always stayed local to the area). He did in fact confirm the car was sold with the A/C. However he could not confirm that it was Dealer installed or not. I believe that would have been done by the dealer. Or possibly ordered with A/C, which come in a box in the truck and then the dealer would have installed it. Either way it is all very original. Also the pulley used on the crank for the A/C option, had to special to be able to accommodate the larger Harmonic balancer.

  • When a/c was dealer installed in early hi-pos, I believe the dealers would also issue warranty cards to the owners listing the date installed, VIN #, owner's name. The Feb '87 issue of Mustang Monthly has a great story of Charles Hampton's '66 red/red GT K conv with a photo of this card.
