spoke with the seller, he's a chevy guy who doesn't know or care to know much about mustangs...he does not know if the engine has any correct K code parts. he was told the original motor was replaced with a 302.

i would like to know what if any correct K parts are under the hood.

Considering the engine in this car has not been positively identified before the auction ended, this car sold for some fairly strong money. It appears to need a lot of work to get it back to running condition. Whoever bought it sure has their work cut out...

BTW, there's no way it has a BOSS 302 block, as the seller hints in the description. BOSS 302 blocks are unique, and can not match up to a set of 289 HiPo heads, or even regular 302 heads for that matter. Makes me wonder what happened to the original engine.

I am looking at buying a '66 Mustang that the data plate identifies as an 'A' code. The seller claims that a 'K' code engine was swapped into it. Without pulling the engine apart, can I tell for sure?

Not really. Over the years, we've answered this question many times on this site, and you'll need to spend some time reading the posts that explain how to identify a real 289 HiPo engine. Take advantage of the ADVANCED SEARCH feature on the site to get more details. You can also check this link to help get started: http://www.hipomustang.com/images/hipoeng/

Won't that scratch the chrome? I see that the nut has a couple of small holes in it, so I figured those would be used somehow.

The holes are for use with a "spanner" wrench which has pins that are fixed to line up with the two holes in the chrome nut. These tools are available in adjustable styles, and are often used in servicing and assembling certain types of bottom brackets on bicycles.

...there was a 66 C code coupe that had a window sticker that read " dealer installed GT and Hipo upgrade..... includes GT stripe, disc brakes.... conversion to full spec 289 hipo"... apparently this full spec conversion didn't include a dual point, fat crank dampner, or correct cylinder heads. Did not hear the car run, don't know about the solid lifter cam, and it had headers on it now, no pic of the original manifolds. supposedly, the car was a factory 4 speed, but in the photo album was a pic of the 2.80 gears that came out for a 3.25 replacement set. I thought that 2.80 gear came behind the C4? was this hipo conversion a popular thing or just offered by a dealer or 2?

In the mid Sixties, Ford sold lots of over-the-counter 289 HiPo parts and conversion "kits" at the dealers. How far you went was up to you and your walet. The dual point distributor, intake manifold and 4V carburetor were bolt on and "entry level", while the solid lifter cam, HiPo cylinder heads, pistons and exhaust manifolds were for more serious small block owners who didn't order a K code car originally. Multiple carburetors on aluminum intake manifolds were also available, but probably were not quite as popular.

wouldnt 'full spec' imply all the pieces to you? my guess is this car got a 4V carb and thats about it.

Yes, I would expect that as well.

I guess I am wondering if any of the owners get together to compare the cars or are even close enough to do so?

Sure! Many of us have been able to meet a various shows and cruises...

I am in Iowa! I am the original owner -- bought in '66 --sold in '77 --- bought back in '81!

    That's remarkable!

    Anybody run their's to 6 grand +?

I do it all the time, and never had any engine problems because of it.

Is that blue tape in the upper left data plate shot? Oil pan - ouch. It's a little sad they didn't have more information to guide their restoration efforts, but a nice car for someone who wants a driver that needs work.

It was so beautiful and dazzling that they forgot to put in the pony interior they talk about, paint the engine the correct color, put the interior door handles on straight, replace the aftermarket battery cables, replace the cheap aftermarket radio, use wiring tie-downs or put the coil in the right place. Nice looking car overall, but I think it dazzled them a little too much.

I was truly let down by not being able to make Carlisle in 2006. Things have changed in my life...desires, interests, goals and most of all...household income. 50% down, so things have changed.

It had to be a big disappointment for you when that trip to Carlisle was cancelled. You've made some tough decisions, and it takes courage and wisdom to do what is right for you and your family. Here's hoping everything works out so that you will have no regrets.

    Greetings,

As the latest member on a forum of a very exclusive club, I would like to say hi. I have a 66 Fastback GT with a 'K' engine, a C4, Pony interior and factory original Styled Steel Wheels - just a basic 'K' car.

    Jim

Hey Jim, sounds like a nice car. Thanks for joining the board.

Can't say as I blame people for backing off on the racing of their K's...I'm done too. Now that my Dad sold all his spare parts, I don't need to window a block, especially before I officially put it on the market for sale.

It's hard to think you're going to be selling the car, Ron. It wasn't that long ago when you finished the restoration and started posting here. I was looking forward to seeing you and the car at Carlisle last year before your plans got cancelled...

My plan was to be a spectator at the first FAST event at Englishtown a couple years ago. But, my friend Mike showed up with his K fastback, and he was ready to race! I couldn't refuse the challenge. What could be better than a classic head to head match up between two HiPo Mustangs that have identical drivetrains?

Neither of our cars are set up for drag racing, and we couldn't drop the clutches at high revs for the "ultimate launch". Our tires weren't sticky enough for that kind of start anyway, and FAST rules don't allow slicks. The best way to race was to get the car rolling, and then nail the pedal. My car was good for a couple of 15 second runs down the strip, and I felt the car could break into the high 14's with slicks and some practice. My car handled the drags without any harm, but I guess there's always a chance for something to break!

I have not done my homework on what to look for on the older K code cars so I'm looking for advice.

I will be going to see the car next week, and would like to have an approximate value range before I go. I have no pictures of the car, just the description I've given.

    Hi Jerry,

This site is loaded with information to answer most of your questions. Taking a "crash course" in all of the details of the K code Mustang is possible if you take the time to browse the posts and use the ADVANCED SEARCH feature. There is a LOT to learn about before you can make an offer on the car, and whether you can do this in a week or less is up to you. You should buy a copy of The 289 High Performance Mustang, available directly from this site to get started.

Buying these cars "right" takes a lot of specific knowledge. If you only have a week to decide, you might be better off getting in touch with someone from this site who lives in your area that has the necessary experience to look at the car with you before you make any commitment to buy the car.

And just what's so bad about that?

Absolutely nothing at all, Larry. It's just disappointing because there are so many more K code Mustangs in the area, but they are never seen together in a "high profile" all Ford venue such as Carlisle.

We've been trying for about 5 years on this website to get a nice turnout of 5-10 cars to qualify for a 289 High Performance Mustang class on the showfield at Carlisle. There is still almost no interest from the members of this site who own a running K Mustang to get together at the All Fords National at Carlisle. (Maybe we should try making it for ALL models with the K code 289, including Fairlanes, Comets, and Shelby Cobras.)

I love the 62-65 Fairlanes. My first car was a Rangoon Red '64 Fairlane Sports Coupe with a "C" code 289, and a factory 4 speed that I bought in March, 1969. That summer, I bought an over the counter 289 HiPo engine and all the other K goodies, including the awesome Arvinode dual exhaust system, to pump new life into the car. Even the suspension was replaced with the factory HiPo Fairlane springs and sway bar, along with a set of 4 Koni shocks. Of course, all the correct parts were available from Ford in those days. A wrecked, low mileage K Fairlane provided the correct 9" rear with 3:89 gears. That car was always a great runner, and it was devastating to me when it was stolen in the summer of 1974.

Nice going! That reminds me of the time we had 4 at the Fox Run Cruise, located in Delaware, almost four years ago. It actually happened twice, once at the September cruise date, and then again at the October cruise with a "substitute" fastback spotted with the other three Kars. Notice that all three body styles are represented... Unfortunately, Rich Marks sold his convertable, and we haven't found another soft top K to replace his in "the lineup"...

If you and 8-10 others actually decide to bring their Kars, we could have a 289 High Performance Mustang class on the showfield!

WOW Gene, thanks for the challange, actually not that far away from going to body shop. I am working on engine bay right now getting ready to put the motor back in, hopefully body shop by fall, put together over winter, Carlisle in June. Sounds like a good plan, hope it comes together.:P

I think it would be great if you can finish your car in time for next year's All Fords Nationals at Carlisle. It's still one of the biggest and best Ford venues anywhere on the planet. I really wish we could get a group of our members to bring their Kars so we could put on a Knockout display for all the Ford fanatics to drool over...
