It's like a new kar

  • After 33 years of high RPM cruising, I changed my ring and pinion to a 3.50 gear set. What a joy to drive now!

All this time I thought I had 4.56's as that is what a previous owner said he installed, it turns out they were 4.11's. I debated between 3.89 and 3.50, the 3.89 would't have been much of a change. Lesson here, make sure of what you got 1st. I got lucky on this swap.

  • Having only had my K for a short while I think it is quite low geared at 3.50:1. It really is quite busy at 70mph. I am used to 30mph per thousand in 5th in my cob rep and the 5th gear in most moderns makes for relaxed cruising. Your ears must have taken a right old bashing over the years!

  • Actually, the real buzzy, or busy numbers are the higher numbers, as the lower numbers equate to lower RPM's at a given speed. I have 3.25 in my auto vert and the rpms's still are high enough to have good jump in top gear. Still a C-4, but decent cruisin' comfort.

I agree, I was still surprised the first time I drove mine. It made me check to see if it was really 3.50:1 and not one of the lower ratios, it is 3.50:1 so I will leave it alone. Perhaps someone will buy me some earmuffs for christmas
