9" rear axle

I am going to look at a 9" rear end in a 1965 mustang & would like for someone to help me with a few questions.

1. What is the overall width?

2. Do all of them have the "step downs"? I was under the impression that some did not have them.

Jim, All of them have the step down out towards the bearing end. You should do an advanced search through the forum as there are a lot of posts and pictures on this topic. One of the main things to watch out for are made up housings using 8 inch axle tubes. There is a noticeable step up from the axle tube to the center section where they weld to the center section whereas the proper housing has no step at all.

Thanks. I was confused about the dimensions on the weld near the center section versus the step down at the bearing end.
