289 Hipo engine selling price

  • I have a 289 Hipo engine that is currently in a 1959 F100 that I may be interested in selling though not sure what the asking price should be.

History of the engine (it was my fathers who had passed away so this is mostly from memory):

Purchased in pieces in early 80's with a Ford Falcon that was used for drag racing. The owner was intending to build the hypo for drag racing but decided to sell car and motor instead.

The block was new (unused) - PN: C6A#-6015-C

Not sure about pistons or crank. Engine was assembled by a builder but unknown who.

Heads are Hypo with 19 and 20 corner castings.

    Harmonic balancer - PN: C50E

Flywheel with Brinnel test mark and orange paint daub - PN: C30E-6380B

Running hydraulic lifters so cam is not Hipo.

Intake, carb and distributor also not Hipo.

Engine has been in truck since 1982, never run hard. Has approximately 50,000 miles on engine. Not used much the last 20 years but did get at least some mileage each year.

I'm assuming since it is not a complete Hipo engine it will not get more than the sum of selling parts separately but just looking for a price someone may be willing to pay for something like this. It really deserves to be in a Mustang.

  • A couple of things will help access value:

    • As mentioned, if you can get an inspection camera up through the oil drain plug and see if it has K rods, that could add a few bucks. Bonus points if you can see the hatchet/counterweight up front next to the timing chain.
    • If you don't mind pulling one or preferably both valve covers, you can get the casting number and date codes on the heads. Some heads hold more value than others, as some crazy guys (like me), are looking for specific dates and will pay more. Also, I could be wrong and others can correct me, but C8ZE service heads seem to hold less value due to the date codes.
    • If you can snag the casting date on the block (next to the C6AE number), as weil as the assembly date stamping (on the machined spot up on the driver's side front near the water pump, that would help folks decide if it's a date code they're looking for.
    • Last point. Since you mentioned it was new block, it probably doesn't have a VIN stamping on the lower passenger side oil pan rail, but if it does, people seem to care a lot about that. If you can check that.

      Hope that helps!

  • A C6AE casting block would have been procuced at the windsor plant not cleveland foundry ,all 289 K code block would have a C5AE-6015 casting from cleveland, looks like what you have is a standard 289 block which would not have a C3OE rear main cap from the factory .
