I purchased this car, or are about to. Trim tag looks suspicious. Production date May 64, making car 64.5...which did not have a trim code of 29, that was 65 and GTs were not produced till Feb 65 at earliest and color code F is guardsman blue, a 64.5 only color. Seller says car is a 65.

I was the first bidder on this Kar. Based on the VIN, it was produced in October 1964. Therefore it is definitely a 1965 and not a 64 1/2. Being as I knew the VIN was for 1965, I took the date code as a Q rather than a D. Neither of these are correct for this Kar. This Kar is in the transitional time from transverse dual exhaust to Arvinode so without checking exhaust hanger bolt holes, I cannot tell which is correct. As you have stated, it is too early to have a pony interior or GT option, so I realized that was wrong on the tag. As far as 64 1/2 colors, that does not always hold true as I have a 1965 that is Phonecian yellow and that color is listed as 64 1/2. Going by the sellers description, it sounds like a solid Kar and I only decided against it because I really wanted correct pony interior and GT, of which I had 3 of these convertibles all at the same time years ago. With the tag discrepancies, I felt that other things like original VIN stamped block and transmission may not be there but I chose not to follow up on these items. The price really came out far less than I would have thought even though some items are wrong. The rear end appears to be correct.

  • This 65 Mustang convertible Guardsman Blue with palomino pony interior is now for sale on BAT by seller "Dubiwan1" with a starting bid of $10,000.00:

This 1965 Ford Mustang convertible is powered by a replacement 289ci V8 and finished in Guardsman Blue over Palomino leather. Features include a four-speed manual transmission, a navy blue fabric convertible top, front disc brakes, bucket seats, an AM radio, a four-row staggered-tube radiator, and a cabin heater. The seller purchased the car in 1996, and a refurbishment in 2022 included installing the rebuilt engine, replacing the left door and right fender, repainting the bodywork, reupholstering the cabin, and installing uprated rear brake drums. This Mustang is now offered with service records and a clean Colorado title in the seller’s name.

The seller notes that the left door and right fender were replaced in 2022 prior to a repaint in Guardsman Blue. A navy blue fabric top and matching boot were also installed. Close-up photos of the paintwork and trim can be viewed in the gallery.

15″ styled steel wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich redline tires manufactured in 2022. The car is equipped with front disc brakes, wider-than-standard rear brake drums, and a 1″ front swaybar.

The cabin was reupholstered in Palomino leather in 2022. The seller notes that the center console, carpets, kick panels, and interior lighting were also replaced.

Rally Pac gauges were installed in 2022. The five-digit odometer shows 31k miles, approximately 17k of which were driven by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.

The seller states that the 289ci V8 was built .030″ over and installed in 2022 using HiPo cylinder heads with hardened valve seats, roller rocker arms, an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold, an Autolite four-barrel carburetor, a four-row staggered-tube radiator, and a PerTronix ignition module.

The car is equipped with a four-speed Toploader manual transmission. The seller notes that the rear end was rebuilt and fitted with 3.50 gears in 2023.

A photo of the trim tag is provided in the gallery.
