Removed from an Early 65 Mustang K-Code Convertible. The Air Cleaner is in Great Original Condition. Has Very Bright Chrome on the Lid. There is just some light pitting on top of the lid. No Major Pitting. A High Polish would make the lid look very nice. There are some light ripples on the outer rim of the lid that I believe are from the stamping process. No Visible Dents or Dings. NO Cracks or Splits. The Inside is Very Clean. The Base is in what looks to be the Original Black Finish and Looks Great. No real Rust or Pitting. No Dents or Dings or Cracks. Very Round. This air cleaner base is one without the nipple for a closed emission system where a hose runs from the nipple to the oil filler cap. All 65, 66 and 67 Shelbys need the nipple. A lot of other Hipo 289's do not need the nipple unless they are California cars.

The gold 65 versions don't seem to have a stamp. I always see 5A, 6A, 6C and 7A on the 66 and 67 versions.

From all of the stamped air cleaner bases that I have observed, the 5A is the only one with a 5 in the stamping. I believe that was discussed previously in the second generation of this forum but that is not available. Therefore my thoughts agrees with yours in that all early 66 Kars before January 1966 would have had a 5A stamp making the blue color correct.

Going further here, I believe that the gold unstamped bases would have had the double hump top portion as they would have been prior to January 1965. I am sure that there will be some variances in this due to using leftover earlier pieces on Kars produced after January 1965.

You will find these pieces to be far heavier in design than the reproduction models, and when properly restored, to be exact in every detail for that classic original restoration. We feel that these are in driver condition and that if you have an unrestored or Driven Class, the condition of this assembly would be acceptable although if yours is a Concourse or Thoroughbred you will probably rechrome and repaint to meet your higher standards.
