paint glossiness

  • (Added comment: I'm not trying to be critical of anyone's paint choices or experience - just asking questions...)

I've been looking at my kar and parts and trying to decide on how I'm going to paint them. A lot of the parts on these kars were in the middle of the gloss range, but I think it is inaccurate to paint everything Krylon semigloss. It seems like the fender aprons should be a semigloss or satin.

But many things on my kar (like the front coil spring covers, ignition coil, splash shields) seem to have been much more glossy than that. Other parts like the main and water pump pulleys seem to have been flatter than that, but not completely flat. I've owned the kar for 18 years, and it sat for 9 years before that (since 1979). I do not believe there was much painting done to it during the first 14 years other than covering the Poppy Red with plain orange, though I can't be sure. It was a beat-up, greasy & rusty college-kid car.

I'm just curious what others have found on their kars. Presumably it will vary depending on when and where the kar was built, and whether a part was sprayed or dipped. I just thought I would voice this concern and re-post this little chart I found in a magazine. Ironically, the parts that it lists as having high gloss are the areas of my kar where the paint rusted completely off!

  • Just as an opinion I would not believe many of those numbers match what I've seen on original cars. So I agree with your comments.

The "list" is very old (over 20?) and believe it originated with Bruce W

As always be careful what you read/believe especially when it comes to older publications. As you can see just by what is discussed here and other forums ... we are learning all the time ;)
