Rear Ratio for 66 with 5 speed

  • I installed a T5Z 5 speed ahead of a 3.89 rear. Originally, I had 4.11's (with a T-10 4 spd) but long cruises were winding the motor out pretty tight if I had to get on an Interstate or Highway. The 3.89's helped quite a bit - but now with the 5 speed I seem to be at a similar predicament but on the other end: First gear winds out really quickly.

I was thinking of going down to a 3.50 or maybe even 3.25 and was curious if any of you had any experience with this.

    Thanks

  • James,

My 66 Shelby has a T5 with the 2.95 first gear. I believe that you can also get a 3.35 first. It has 3.89 rear end. The combination is fine, although I would prefer a longer first gear. At 60 mph in 5th the car cars on 2200-2300 rpm so it still has some nice punch in 5th.

  • I ran a 3:50 9-inch in my '67 w/ a World Class T5 (modified 302 V8). Not bad at all, but in 5th gear I wished for something a bit shorter - so maybe 3.73 or 3.89.
