Folks, We're in the home stretch now with my Kar, just finishing up little stuff, ordering the tags and decals......is there one made for around the choke knob on our HIPOs?? would you still use the standard visor sleeve??
Choke Operation Tag for '65??

Seems like there was some descussion about this earlier but I can't find it-it had something to do with the special HIPO suplement manual which I now have, but I don't really remember seeing a special tag that would hang from the choke cable knob to tell new car buyers back in 1965 how to use a manual choke??
I guess there were so many older cars like Falcons for instance and trucks back in the early-mid 60s that had manual chokes that it was thought that everyone knew how to operate them....
It is interesting however that there IS a decal for '69-'70 Bosses & Shelbys that goes on the dash telling about the manual choke....

My friends at VA Mustang tell me that there was such a tag originally but don't think it is reproduced....

I'll bet anything that a young person say 16-21 years old wouldn't have a clue how to start a vehicle with a manual choke!!!

I have never seen or heard of a tag for the manual choke operation on a 65-66 Mustang.

Having been old enough to vote when the Mustangs were introduced maybe this will help get things in an order that is easier to understand. It was second nature for those in that era to operate a manual choke! Everyone, from old timers to school girls knew and understood how to start mechines - mowers, tractors, trucks and yes, even cars - with a "hand" choke as it was called. One learned that routine from childhood. With mostly 6 volt systems on everything we became an expert at "feeling" how to move the choke in relation to what sound was coming from under the hood. You only had a short crank time to get a motor started before the battery went dead! You got good at operating the choke or you had to walk! It was the AUTOMATIC choke that caused so much confusion. That aspect of mechanical progress was the sugject of much discussion, and cussing, by many people who had problems dealing with modern mechanicel marvels. Most needed instructions on how to deal with the new and improved automatic choke and some prayed for a return to the old hand choke equipped cars. I do not remember any "instruction" tag for a hipo car. I do not think there was a need for such a thing. I was working in the automotive trade at that time and can tell you that the problems associated with starting cars on cold Illinois mornings were all happening with automatic choke equipped cars, not with hand choke machines. Just adding this to kind of put things in the perspective of 1964.

Brant: I spoke with Kevin, at your place just yesterday about this and he said he remembered seeing one at one time, but thought that they were not reproduced.
Murf: Your point is well taken, I am a bit younger at now 51 but I learned to drive on my Grandfather's 1961 Comet with a manual choke!!
And I agree 100% with you!!
BUT: Why the need for a DECAL for the dash just above the choke knob on 1969-70 Boss and Shelby cars?? was that age group no longer aquanted with the manual choke operation?
